do all the variations use the same ring and pinion? im lookin to pick up some gears pretty cheap from a guy and his was a d70U and mines a D70HD. thanks guys

As far as I know the R&Ps are the same through all of the versions. It's the housings that are different, specificly ribbing on the center section, tube thickness, wheel bearings, etc.

cool, yea i knew bout the other differences. i thought theyd probably be the same, but wanted to make sure before i bought them. thanks

I'm pretty sure the ring and pinions are different, try calling randy's or reider racing and asking them.

There are some variations between the 70s as far as gears go. I don't know which ones will interchange, but I knew a guy who got a 70(dont know which one) but he was limited to like a 4.10 gear so he ended up using a 14bff in his truck.

EDIT: i have a reider racing catalog at my bro's house, I think it would answer your question. I'll look this weekend if you still need to know.

that would be sweet. thanks man. yea the d70 3-HD is the one thats limited to 4.10's. i just dont know bout the rest

I found a different catalog. The Dana 70 and 70-u are interchangable the 70-hd is different it uses different bearings on the carrier and pinion and is its own beast. There is no aftermarket gears available for the HD that I could find.

Which catalog is that? Because there are aftermarket gears available for the HD, my brother has 5.86s in his d70HD. I want to say they were precision gear or yukon.

yea i know d70hd's have gear selection, its the d70HD-3 that doesnt have the gear options lower than 4.10's

the axle is all rusty, ill see if i can get it sanded down to check the bom. where is it going to be located on the housing?
