do any of you run atf instead of powersteering fluid?

I use atf. In fact I read in one of my manuals, Haneys or Chiltons, that it said that dextron III is fine in the power steering.

Hmm, only the taste test can determine that! Haha, I always get a chuckle from people because I always wipe a little of a mystery leak on my finger and have a taste, makes diagnosis time almost nill /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. I got enough taste for ATF when I tried to fill my 208 for the first time, YUCK!

old thread!!

I use P/S fluid now. I used to use ATF but it's too thick and you get less power assist with it. I use P/S fluid now in my crossover/hydro and it works out great. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

yeah talk about old....I was gonna respond to this thread and saw I already did....two years ago! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

But to restate, I use PSF only, cost is not much more and I only need to put a little in now and then. But I think its funny that there are a lot of people saying they only use ATF, and that it doesn't matter, and yet they seem to be putting the most fliud in! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

When we were putting the hydro steering system on my buggy Howe said to ONLY run their PSF or GM power steering fluid. Anything that had atf in it would not be warrantied.

Howe knows their stuff and I listened. I know that AGR won't touch a pump on warranty that has ATF in it.
I don't know why but they seem to know something that we don't.

Yep, I carry only PSF. It saves space. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Since my owners manual says I can use power steering fluid OR Dextron II ATF,I use the ATF 99% of the time--the only time I use power steering fluid is when I find a can in a newly purchased vehicle,or its on sale for 98 cents a quart,or if its a vehicle like a honda that requires special power steering fluid--if you put anything else in a honda P/S pump, the seals literally dissolve--and even a junkyard pump aint cheap for a honda!.I've never had any issues with Dextron II in my GM trucks,no leaks or noticable difference in steering effort.I have found transmission stop leak works well in power steering boxes and pumps also,we used to reccomend it over power steering sealer at the parts store. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
