im thinking of replaceing my rear spool with a detriot to save my tires on long on road trips to wheeling spots. i got military 37 goodyears now but i want to get some swampers eventually, but not until i get some kind of other locker in the rear to save them from the pavement. so im wondering does a detriot reallly help save your tires? or should i wait and save and spend the $ and get a arb, which i must mention i live in 7000ft elevation and it gets pretty cold here in the winter and i read alot about the compressors not likeing to work in the cold.

Simple answer yes, your rear inside tire is scrubbing every single time you turn that wheel even just a bit. With a detroit it will unlock most of the time when you turn.

ARB is even better.

Get a Detroit and be done with it. Simple as that.

thats what i like....a simple answer :waytogo: i used to have some tsl radials on blazer when its was a dd and the rear was welded and i think i only got a year outa them even tho they were used.

Looks identical to the Detroit.

I don't understand the different part numbers to the different years on that though.

With a Detroit, its one part number and fits all the 14FF's except for the 3 spider Gov-bombs.

Ok, I checked the links and they're just pics of the 14FF cover for identification purposes.

One part number on the Grizzly, just like the Detroit. Both look alike.

Actually, with Hummer tires available for $75 now, I've been starting to think that a spool is a good idea. What does an ARB cost - $800? That pays for 5 sets of rear tires. But the driveability can certainly be improved with a Detroit or (better yet) selectable locker.

just the locker is 850 somthing, then 250+ for the compressor...then 4wheel parts wants over 400$ to install just the locker.....so thats about 4 more sets:eek1: but the hummer tires dont compare to swampers :pimp:.

Doesnt this happen with the foot off the gas only?

pretty much... but sometimes it will lock and slide ya a bit.. it is funny when it happens.. my friend was at a light and said looked like i shart myself!!! :haha:

basically when you turn, the teeth are supposed to allow it to click and ratchet but with skinny pedal down all pressure is applied...

only other thing about the detroit is when it unloads... i took off at a light.. got some speed up and hear a loud bang and my frame shook... i was told detroits do that from time to time..

if i had to rebuid again my first upgrade on ANY truck would be detroits front and rear... before lift, tires, etc.... just adding detroits to my truck.. i goto play with others.. they can 2wd 1 leg wonder into a shallow mudslick... i get there and hammer it and i just go through without a workout.... so that is good... but takes some of the fun away cuz then you need to find deep goooo:waytogo:

That's not unloading, that's locking up again.

I've got a detroit in the rear on the street and it is has worn the rear tires twice as fast as the fronts.

My last truck had a Detroit and my current K5 has a spool. I don't know about tire wear yet but I do know there's a huge difference in the amount of drag applied to the truck/drivetrain. For instance, when backing out of my driveway my old truck would coast thru a turn, this spool stops the K5 quick. I thought the brakes were dragging until I checked them all. :eek1:

My detroit has only locked on me twice when making a turn on the street. I usually just accelerate through the turn normally, and it won't lock up. That's normal, right?

If you throttle through a turn it will still spin the inside tire since the torque is only going through the inside tire at that point instead of being divided through the spiders equally to the rear wheels. So, if you have a heavy foot, you will still wear your rears out way before the fronts.
