when you put a detroit in the 14bff 2 piece case do you have to set the gears up again or just put it back like it was? does pinion have to come out to warrant a new crush sleeve?

Installing a detroit in a 14ff will only require you to recheck backlash and nothing more. The pinion does not need to be removed for any reason.
Backlash and carrier bearing preload.
Scribe the side adjusters and put em right back where they were on re-install.

And be SUPER careful not to nick the two surfaces that the carrier mates on. Any imperfection or dirt/whatever will mess up the ring and pinion contact.
