So i had the blazer running and i went to pick up a screwdriver that fell under it. And i heard a noise. Put my ear up to everything. And it was im the oil pan. A sound like a wire around something spinning just barely hitting something... If you can imagine that sound... The 408 sbc has prolly 4000 miles and a high volume oil pump (no idea on brand,i had it built). Now ive never noticed it before, but ive never crawed under it while it was running.... I held a stethascope to the block and everywhere else, and no noise. Held it to the pan and i hear it.... Hmmmm

Only the ones about to go bad.................................:whistle:

Its a moving part, its almost got to make a noise of some kind. No idea what is normal, or if you should be able to hear it over the engine.

The way you described it, sounds like something loose on the crank that is hitting the side of the block or pan.

Obviously not a bearing cap or something like that, more noise and the rod would come off.

At this point, you only have a few options.

1, pull the pan, check for something hitting.
2, drive around town with your stethoscope listening to other oil pans. Might get you talked about.
3, ignore it until it finally drives you insane with worry.

All I got. :dunno:

standard or high volume pumps do not make noise.

probably just a piece of a spun bearing slapping against the side of the pan...

nothing to worry about......:whistle::whistle:

Ls time! Lol. Nah we started up 3 other chevys and they all make the same noise. Its nothing crazy, just something i never noticed because i never been under it while running

I doubt its the oil pump you hear,its more likely the distributor shaft or the gears driving it maybe,or possibly the pump in the transmission if its an automatic,they make some whirring and slight whine type noise...ever hear a Powerglide in park ?..

same thing the other fella said when they go bad but usually u won't hear it for long because much worse things are about to happen
