so i went to install my conversion ujoint to run my 14bff in my k5, and noticed that there are two different sizes of caps - the larger fits my driveline and i can't imagine that the smaller size would be for the 14bff. in your experiences, is this the case? sorry for the newb q. ;) thanks.

Small cap went in my shaft, big into the 14b yoke. You may have a 1350 shaft already since you said it fits and may not need a conversion joint, although that would be kinda wierd since im guessin u had a 10b before...

Yep small side on the d-shaft. See if the big side fits in the 14b yoke too. If it does take the joint back you already have a 1350 d-shaft. Do you have a 4spd? They came from the factory with a 1350 d-shaft

I'm going to take a shot in the dark, which could be incorrect. You have an 80's K5 that had a 10bolt rear end. You picked up a conversion joint that goes from a 10b shaft to a 12b yolk. My memory is very fuzy because it's been a few years since I was doing the conversion myself, so i could be wrong, but I think the 10b actually has a slightly larger ujoint than the 12b and that there is your problem. You have a 10 to 12 joint, not a 10 to 14. I think, like I said....just a shot in the dark if my memory serves...

interesting. i do have an '83 rig, which did have the 10b. i picked up the joint from another ck5 member - so we'll see if napa will just swap it out. i don't have a 4spd - yet. ;) ok - so basically the concensus is that the larger cap should go to the pinion - thus, my ujoint is wrong, right?

10b joints are s44s, pretty close to the same size as a 1330. 12bs are 1310s, 14bs are 1350s. they conversion joints for all three combos so yeah, you could have the 10b/12b combo. Do like the others have said and try to fit the big end in the 14b yoke.

Handy little chart

I can't agree with the generalities above. But here are some actual measurements and part #s.
Check Baddog's homepage for some more info. I think he has a chart also.

the half ton numbers that are listed are for 12b yokes, not 10b. GM hasn't used 1330 joints in trucks AFAIK, atleast not in pre 92 trucks. The 10b uses an S44 joint, very close in size to a 1330, but is not a 1330. Ill try to find the PN i used for my conversion, s44 to 1350, 10b to 14bff.

Edit: this all refers to the non manual 4 speed trucks, which, like mentioned above, used the 1350 joints.

Just for reference, the 10b to 14b conversion joint PN is 2-1153. Search the site if you wanna find the other PNs. They are all over on here.

Cap measurements for this joint are 1.125" (S44 sides) and 1.188" for the 1350 sides. 3.620" between the tops of the 1350 cap sides.

another way to tell for sure...... the saginaw joints use internal c-clips. spicer size joints always use external retainers or E type clips on the outside. ive got pictures of 1310 vs S44 vs 1350 yokes ill try to dig up. the saginaw s44 is quite a bit larger than the 1310, i dont know why people always get them confused?

10 bolts had saginaw s-44

the saginaw s-44 => spicer 1350 conversion joint is napa/precision 447
