Do i need to drop the driveshaft to slide the trans back?

i need to slide the trans back about 3/4" to 1" because i didn't, apparently, seat the torque converter properly as it is tight against the flexplate. Do i need to remove the driveshaft to slide the transmission back?

This is a 2WD truck w/ TH-350 trans.

You may not HAVE too--but taking 4 nuts off the yoke u-bolts or straps wont take 5 minutes..it may take you longer to battle with moving the trans back without detaching the driveshaft ..

You could try removing all the bellhousing bolts and putting two opposing longer bolts back in so the trans can slide back on them like dowel pins..but the driveshaft slip yoke might want to fight you,even though it'll have a few inches of "slack"..I replaced a flex plate this way,but doing it alone sucked..

You wont need to remove it, but it will make it easier


That being said, I would remove it because if you bolted up the bellhousing tight and then realized the converter wasnt seated you could have damaged the pump, and if you actually spun the converter, you might as well drop the entire thing.

Fortunately (i guess?) i did not yet bolt the bellhousing to the engine tight and didn't spin the tq (mainly because it is too tight i can't.....)

So.........if the truck moves and doesn't make any funny noises, then i didn't damage the pump? (fingers crossed.....)

So the main fear now, is not having to move the trans back, but the likelyhood if damage to the front pump or not?

You could have easily broken the trans pump and or drive ears on the convertor. I would pull the trans back down and remove the convertor and see that there is no damage to the convertor ears then look closely at the pump to see if you see anything there.

If you didn't try to pull the tranny tight to the engine using the bell bolts you should be OK.

Keep in mind I cracked mine upon first installation and it didn't fail for another ~10k miles.... if its possible I would inspect the pump rotor very well. Or you'll be like me [emoji19]
