I searched and search and could not find the answer for this question but must you use a 7.25" shackle for the 52"/56" swap? I don't like the idea of using that long of a shackle. Can you get by with using a 6" shackle. I have no intention of moving the real hanger FYI. I was taking some measurements and it seams like a 6" might work.

i used a 6.75 shackle and it worked great. If you dont move the rear hangar, you will not get all the benefits of the swap, and you dont need anything more than a 4 1/2 in shackle. I ran stock shackles in stock location for a while and it worked, but nothing like when i moved my shackle hangar.

a 6in long shackle with hangar in stock location is just asking for problems

I don't understand the reference to moving the rear hanger? The rear hanger position plays no role in it that i can tell??? It all depends upon shackle angle and spring position no???? whats the difference between 7.25" 6.75" and 6" shackle length assuming all set with a 45 angle??? I see people using stock location all the time but not sure if it was possible with other shackle length.

My reasoning for the shorter length shackle is less lift and more suspension control. My opinion is why longer shackle if you don't need it.

My thoughts as well???? I am gearing up to do the swap as well.

The position of the rear shackle hanger is a function of spring length, Forward mounting position, spring rate, vehicle weight and desired angle at rest, etc. etc.

One person may need to move their rear hanger forward based on the variables while another may not.

I prefer a 6" long shackle on the back and try not to go longer. A 7.25" shackle is definitely not necessary. I'd avoid it if at all possible.

Ive used 6" shackles on both trucks I did the 52" swap, including the one I have now.

I would avoid the 7.25 shackles as well. I know several here run them with no problems but Ive broken the factory 7/16s shackle bolts with 6" shackles and the longer the shackle is the more leverage it will have on the shackle bolts. Ive upgraded my shackle bolts since then but it is still something to consider.

The OP needs to remember that most (if not all) of the references to the 7.25" shackle he's finding are probably from 52" swaps that also moved the rear hanger. If you don't the whole swap then the standard "recipe" wont work for you.

I'm not saying you have to move the hanger just that you shouldn't be trying to apply "rules of thumb" of a bigger swap if you don't intend to follow all the steps you got your info from.

Thanks for the help guys!

Hey Kert! Did you get my email about rear leaf rear shackle hangers? It will be your shackles and B-52 kit i will be ordering when im ready!

nvrenuf: Actually quite the opposite i think! I understand the 7.25 shackle for the relocation of the rear hanger but most the threads that didn't relocate the rear hanger still seamed to use the 7.25" (maybe for height) or they don't mention shackle length!

Yep, I replied to it this morning.
