The gaskets fromt he NP208 to the adapter.
and the gasket from the SM465 to the adapter.

Do you have to use the gasket?
Would sealant be as good?

Need to know, getting ready to put the TC back in.
Thanks,
Eddie

I hear you need the gasket on the SM465 side, or the adapter won't torque down evenly (i.e. it acts like a shim)

thin layer of RTV on the mating surface... then the factory-style gasket... then another thin layer of RTV... let it get tacky, bolt it together.

If your local parts place doesn't have them, you might try a tranny shop.

If you don't mind the possibility of it leaking and having to do it over again, you could just use RTV. I'd prep the heck out of the mating surfaces and lay very nice beads of RTV though...

USE THE GASKET

The gasket acts as a shim and is very important to maintain the proper clearance between your adapter and transmission. Some guys may have gotten by without it for some weird reason but it really needs to be there.

I thought I had screwed up my sm465 after I put it back together and bolted it in the truck without that gasket. I put it in reverse to back out of the garage and it wouldnt budge. Just stalled the engine. Thats because the bearings were jammed against the adapter and wouldn't let the shafts turn.

I took my transfer case back out and put the right gasket in there just like the good lord intended it to be.

seriously... I cant stress enough... you need that gasket.
