I can't be sure if it is shot or not, what do you think;) I had an insatiable desire to get the old beast running again, and I'm trying to put all the vids together. Can someone put them all together, if so, I'll upload them all and email them to you.

But for now, some good sounds and smoke:D

first off i didnt make it all the way threw both videos. :doah:

DITCH THE STARTING FLUID.

then looks like to me and sounds like the carb is in need of a major reman job.

then possible valve seals.

most of that smoke from tail pipe is prob moisture till you rev it and get black ritch unburnt gas.

and fyi that motor is a 87 up with center bolt valve covers. or atleast the heads are.

It hadn't run in three years so I was using starting fluid to get it running to help get gas in the carb

The carb was fairly recently rebuilt when I put it on.

The heads were "brand new" as in rebuilt when I purchased them. Seals are prolly bad though since it sat so long:crazy:

When I put the heads on, I checked the cylinders for wear and found a lip on most of the cylinder walls, but being a stupid teenager at the time (5 years ago) I threw it all together and called it good.:doah:

I'll have to confirm that, I was told '67, but you may be right. And before the motor went south, it ran great and got good economy (11-12 mpg) The thread title is sarcasm.

But even a poorly adjusted carb will still get fuel into the engine. if you listen to the sound of the engine its starving for fuel.

Before you do any more make sure the pump is supplying fuel pressure about 7 psi as I remember for carbed Chevrolet's.

Then make sure the accelerator pump is pumping a squirt of gas into the venturi's when the pedal is depressed.
if all that is happening the thing should at least try to start without the starting fluid.

starting fluid = bad juju! - only for lawn mowers

if its sat for any length of time. the fuel that WAS in the bowls has turned to varnish no question. stuck needles something.

needs a major cleaning.

Definitely don't use more starting fluid. Why make it worse?

A tiny splash of gas if the carb is dry, and give it a try. Might take a few times, but better than ether.

The first vid, to me it sounds like/looks like the accel pump isn't working at all. A lot of the smoke can be blamed on the carb IMO.

Well before I parked it three years ago, it ran great, good economy, good power, little smoke, then one day, it decided to take a crap, and started the smoking. It lost a lot of oil on the street and started coughing. I figure since the cylinder walls were scored and had a lip when I put the new heads on, that the piston rings finally let go under the higher compression. They are original to the '79 block. For me, to see it actually run, and pretty good like it did, gives me shivers of the good kind:D It's giving me hope to really get it going this spring.

For all you unbelievers, I'll go out tomorrow and fire it up WITHOUT starting fluid. My camera only records 3 minutes, and after it quit, I got it to start without ether. My idea with the ether was to get the motor running while the pump primed the carb and got gasoline into it. After a few minutes, the motor started and ran well on it's own.

It's carburetor rebuild time baby! Get an electric choke while your at it. You might have a good runner there if you can do that. Quadra-toilets are fairly easy to rebuild too.
I'm going to, this spring.:D I'm just trying to hype myself up for it. The bottom end (rings, pistons, ect) is 30 years old and is either going to be replaced or rebuilt, with a new clutch and tires. Electric choke is a definite must, I had a manual choke with the Carter/Holley carb, but kinked the cable replacing the heads, and never got around to fix it.
