Do you use your K5 for DD/hauling, or have 2nd truck?

Happy Sunday!

Looking for some insight here to do a bit of problem solving.

I have an 87 Silverado blazer, 4x4, 350, 700r4, np208, 12 bolt rear dana 44 front, 4.56 gears, 6" lift and 35s. I would never sell this truck - too much fun!

Recently i picked up an old 1st gen Cummins , 92 3/4 ton 4x4 longbed auto. The intention was to use her for hauling and towing but it was more of a future investment. I'm going to be buying farm property within a year or so and wanted to be equipped. I came into a bit of money so was able to buy the dodge for cash, $6500. The more i get into her the more problems and abuse i find from the previous owners and have dropped few Gs already, likely more to come.

I may not ever end up needing to haul heavy equipment like tractors; a lot of the draw was wanting a pickup bed for supplies/rocks/loads of hot chicks etc. but lately I'm wondering if it would save time, money and just be more practical to pick out a flat trailer with sides, such as 12 ft landscape type deal. That way when i need to do my home depot and ranch store runs, i don't have to load the blazers inside.

I live in a small mountain town now -last time i dd the blazer was in Phx, long commutes- but now most days are less than 5-10 miles round trip. So mpg isn't going to hurt as bad.

Who here DDs their blazer, or better yet uses it to haul trailers? Is it safely or practically doable? Again it's more about pickup bed functionality and hauling stuff once in a blue moon. Thoughts? A part of it also is that the dodge has been a costly pain lately and while the blazer rarely has issues, lately I've had both vehicles going down at the same time.

I DD a bone stock 87 K5. No pickup truck. So a small trailer was necessary. Just 4x8, 16 feet long with the tounge so I can get long pieces of steel on it.

I think if you had brakes on the trailer and watched the weight, no big deal.

I pull a 18' car hauler with two rzr's and a 4 wheeler with no problems, but the trailer does have brakes.

I use mine for a little bit of everything.

I DD a combo of Blazers, pickups, and Suburbans.

I usually use either the 1987 V10 or the 1988 V10 Suburban to pull with though.

Nice pic and blazer magik!

Thanks for the input guys. I may still keep the dodge as the work horse so that my dear blazer gets to rest during the day and be my night and weekend girl!

It is nice how functional our blazers are though. Living on the mountains "off grid" over the summer i had the top off and often used to blazer to haul water. No trailer, with the back bench seat removed i put a pallet over the bracket mounts, tank on top and straps to the mounts.

I've had her for about ten years now and the idea of ever selling went out the window long time ago! Even for 50k I'd say no thanks... Not about the money!

I DD my 82 k5 dana 60 14 bolt with 538s and 38" tires with a 454 driving a 700r4 once the weather warms up the hitch will be going back on getting about the same mpg as i did with my 88 350 tbi have been daily driving a k5 for 20 years now

:thumb: right on!

I prefer to not drive cars (too tall for one...) and trucks are just so much more useful. IMO every man needs to own at least ONE full size truck or SUV. Otherwise how do you get anything done, construction or project-wise? Or haul toys and gaggles of girls up to the lake??? :dunno:

With all that considered I really don't mind the MPG on the 'ol girl. Maybe 13-14 mpg if I catch the wind? LOL I used to own an 05 2wd Dodge Hemi single cab pick up, all stock and would average only 15-16 mpg. Betty (my blazer) has 6" lift, 35" KM2s and is shaped like a giant block , and is only a few mpg less economical - that works for me!

I daily drive one with a 6" lift and 35s. I have also hauled several cars with it.

Honestly as long as the trailer has brakes I feel pretty comfortable towing with mine. Heaviest I have towed is Horton ( my wheeling truck) so load just under 7k. Only reason it sucks is cause I have a NA 6.2 diesel. So slow.

I would tow long distances with it if the motor had a turbo. But any kind of hill and its down to 45.

I have hauled dirt, rocks, junk cars, building supplys etc on my trailer. I don't have a pickup either. Works pretty well.

Hauling or towing is for the 2006 Silverado Z71. Her truck

Daily driving and anything else is for my 87 K5. My son-in-law has a short video of me hauling two 6"x6"x16' cedar posts in the K5. Workers at Menards didn't think we could do it. NO PROBLEM!

I've also worked and DDed out of Blazers, trucks and burbs for years. They will do just about any work you throw at em. Wont be as fast and pretty as the new stuff, but it it'll get done.

Also, trailers are great cause you can pull em in whatever you end up driving:thumb:
