Dodge axle spool

Ive wrote this question before with no reply--trying it again....

Ive got a 2004 dodge ram 2wd 6cyl manual trans.

Its got 5" lift in front with 3" lift out back (level ride)

My problem is Ive been looking for a MINI SPOOL for a Chrysler 9.25 rear axle (has 31 spline shafts)...

NO ONE HAS THEM!!!!

My truck will be a pre-runner.....Ive seen them for the 8.75 acle but NOT the 9.25 (8.75 has the cound cover-------9.25 has the diamond shape cover)

any one know anyone that makes one?

Why not just weld the spiders?
Most people go for the mini-spool because it is cheap, if that is your reason....then just weld it.

How about a locker?

I know there's a NoSlip that will go right in.

To answer both questions.

I dont weld spider gears because a spool I can take back out... Once you weld its permenant!

Your right I want it on the cheap.. So a $500+ locker is out of the question... This is all because its a 2wd and if i were to trade it in. I dont want too much invested in it..

(if your wondering why i dont trade it in now..its because i owe more than its worth and I dont feel like adding $10k to the next trucks price)

that would be a decent scenario... but used parts from another truck that has a wear pattern already in it?

i just dont understand why with an axle that popular why there isnt a mini spool available

The spiders dont have anything to do with the ring gear as far as pattern go's. The spiderball would be inside the carrier. You could swap the spiderball quick.

I remember people pondering that when I had my '99 1500.

Is there a Lock Right available? At least with the NoSlip it's less than $500 and you can take it out and resell it when the truck goes bye bye. Lunchbox Lockers are usually pretty easy to install. I did one on my 8.8" and if I can do it...pretty much anyone can.

even the powertrax or lock right is way to expensive for my taste....id weld but i dont know a good welder

Could the reason a mini spool isn't available be that the stock carrier isn't strong enough to withstand the stress? :dunno:

Probably just because it's a limited application. ONLY Dodge half tons since the early 80's. Most people modifying them are going to go for a limited slip or locker OR just swap it out in favor of a larger axle.
The 9.25" is a decent half ton axle but just about any 3/4 or larger ton axle is better.

The axles sure can take the abuse..besides the axle tube necking down at the wheel hubs, the axles are pretty tough..

People put 38's on these axles with little or no issue..

there is a spool, locker, mini spool and other differential options for the 8.75 axle application and thats a smaller axle..

I wanted a mini spool not only because its cheap but i could take it in and out when i pleased...

also with the spider gears, if there is metal to metal contact there sure will be a wear pattern (even on spider gears).

I really dont see if you weld the spider gears; how it is possible to take them out..because you weld them when there in the case and you cant fit a large mess of metal like that out of a small hole????

Look for Ira's (Sandawgk5) cheap locker or 4x4 thread.
That is how you weld them and make them still removable. It took him a few hours to weld them up like that. The welding was easy though, just be sure the gears are clean.

The 8.75 used to end up in a lot of the MOPAR muscle cars so that's why it has more options.

Thanks that is a whole world of help......

How do welded gears fair with on-road conditions?

I know from lowering a 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco ( Think Blues Brothers with hide away headlights ) , that the pinion bearings will puke rather quickly after modifying the suspension :p:

They handle just like a spool. Both tires spin the same speed wether you are going straight or are in a turn.

I have a detroit and I dont think it ever unlocks around corners so I would think it would be the same way.

The article Readymix posted for you is in my front axle and with all 4 tires locked in on pavement it is nearly impossible to turn. I get alot of squeelin from all of the tires as they all turn the exact same speed:D.
