Dodge Cummins! '98-'02!

Re: Dodge Cummins! \'98-\'02!

From what I understand the Dodge only issue with the NVG-4500 is the harmonics of the Cummins at low RPM's . GM and gas motor Dodges do not seem to suffer from the nut backing off .
The other motors just don't beat on the drivetrain like a strong in-line motor at lower RPM's - From what I have read the pulses from the motor just reeks havoc on parts after the engine while under heavy loads .
Note : All the info that I have gained on this subject has come from the TDR over the past four years - it is a fantastic source of knowledge.

The issue with towing in O.D. is the strain on the O.D. gear and related parts ( shaft , bearings , etc....) when a manual tranny is in direct drive the counter shaft bearings see no load but when any other gear than one to one is used the counter shaft has force on it . Most O.D. gear failures ( not including the Cummins/NVG-4500 problem ) come from serious fatigue from the counter shaft bearings which inturn kills the gear itself . The ZF / 4500 / 5600 tranny's are all stout and can take some abuse in O.D. but they all have limitations .
I personally tow in O.D. with my pull truck but I opt for 5th ( direct drive ) gear if the RPM's get below 1900 or so in O.D. .

Great info! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif That makes m feel a lot better about the nv4500 behind a vortec 454 in my work chevy dually.

I'm glad I went with the auto in my new dodge cummins, both my work trucks are manuals and it's nice to get in my cummins and not have to shift. Plus the auto is fairly faster than the manual trucks because with the auto the turbo stays spooled.
