Dodge DD issues...

I've got an 04 Dodge Ram... 5.7L Hemi.

Doesn't want to run when engine is cold... will caugh and sputter and even quit at times when pulling out of the driveway. RPM's go up and down... When I give it a little gas to keep it running, the engine spikes in rpm's and jumps forward (or reverse) and is a real PAIN.

I've been dealing with this for a while and thought I'd ask you guys to see if you've ever had any Dodge issues...

Replace Spark plugs, wires, O2 sensors, cat, and plenty of other things that I can't count. Any ideas are appreciated.

I have replaced a throttle body on one of these for that issue. Kinda hard to say without looking at it though

Throttle position sensor maybe.
Any codes?

Had a problem like that and it was my temp sensor sending the computer weird readings.
But that was a Ford.

The non-Dodge mechanic thinks that it might be the throttle position sensor... ( I need to check and see how much it is) I took it to the dealership and they just told me to replace the plug wires... which didn't help. Will certain sensors go bad like that and not show up with an engine light?

I just rolled over 100k miles so I figured I'd be replacing some stuff... but I'd like to be replacing the RIGHT stuff... as it comes along.

The engine light depends on how it went bad and what the computer is looking for. The TPS should be relatively cheap and probably can be put on by you.
It is testable, but if its cheap, just replace it.

Otherwise, you will need a needle type ohm meter. Digital won't work. All the TPS is, is a potentiometer.
It has three pins. One is the wiper. The resistance varies between the wiper and the two other pins as you turn it.
That tells the computer how far you are pressing the accelerator.

06 is a little old, but some of the newer cars are drive-by-wire.
My 98 Mercedes is like that.
There is no linkage between the accelerator and the throttle body. Instead, what would be the TPS, tells the computer how far you pressed the go pedal, and a stepper motor opens the throttle that much.
I doubt that yours is that way, but that would definitely cause those problems if that unit went bad.

Not on a hemi but on my sister's dodge I had to replace something called the idle air control valve (or something like that) because she was having a very similar issue and it fixed it. It was bolted to the side of the throttle body.
