I'm currently running a Edelbrock 1406 on my 79, but its just on loan because I couldn't find anyone local to fix my Q-junk....er I'm mean Q-jet.

I purchased a reman Q-jet from Advance several years ago, and it has been rebuilt twice by a local mechanic and still does not run right. It loads up on fuel, and doesn't react when adjusting the mixture screws at all. Once moving down the road it would scream when opened up, but taking off of low RPM running it loads up, chokes, dies all the time.

I took a trip to harlan, KY last fall for there annual weekend event, and I decided to hit the mud hole at least once before the weekend was out. Well half way through the pit I hit a set of ruts or something which shook the hell outta the truck:eek1: and after I got out the motor was stuck @ 2K RPM's. I couldn't figure out what was up the carb other than its just ****ed. Just curious if anyone here is willing to look it over for me...I'll pay you for your time. Just hoping to save some $$ I don't have over buying a Truck Avenger.

I'm probably not much help in California, but I have a friend whose been doing carbs for years. He's primarily an aircraft carb guy, but is also a racer and is familiar with Qjets and Hollys. PM me if you want the info.

Not sure on price but you could PM a member on this board named Noahrob. He ran one of Sean Murphys q-jets.

Why not just buy a holley truck avenger, ready to go out of the box and be done with it. Why stick with Quadrajunk?

Quadrajet's a better carb when tuned properly. Probably the best all around 4-barrel carb there is.

The problem is that today the art of tuning a Quadrajet is vanishing and so many folks can't do it that they have a bad reputation after some ham fisted well meaning person (not you Got Smoke, I know how long you've been fighting this) screwed up theirs and then goes around telling everyone they suck. Seen it happen many times.

Got any speed shops in your area? Muscle car restoration places/people?

for every person unhappy with a quadrajet.....there is another in love with them. When remanufactured right and tuned for your specs they are gold.

For the holley off road carb, I have one currently and have had 2 of them, and played with a few on peoples rigs I suggested to buy one.. out of the 5..well all five offered different challenges or issues. Not one of the five was ready to play nice out of the box. If you don't care about a tuned motor or running right..then maybe out of the box will work for you:tongue1: A holley by my opinion can be a wonderful carb with good performance capabilities when tuned correctly.

the quadrajets biggest downfall seems to be the throttle bushings or tuning issues. Most rebuilds do not seem to address the throttle bushings.

for a fantastic well recommended carb guy with quadrajets. look up I5carberators in california. PM pauly383 as he has been running his for I believe 5 years?

I used to rebuild Quads at night on my coffee table for extra cash... musta done 20 pairs back in the day for the boaters... I might see 1% Carters, and 1% Holleys, the rest are ALL Quadrabogs... Awesome carb...

EVERYONE should own Doug Roe's book....

Sure I'll be glad too.......as soon as you send me $400 CASH to buy one!

I simply do not have the money to buy a Holley TA......I DO have a Q-jet sitting here I would like to get running correctly. Thanks for all the responses.

Want to look over mine and see if you can tell what's wrong with it?! So far your the closest!:haha:

Concur on the Doug Roe book. It's fun reading if nothing else. At least you'll have an understanding of how/why they work.

I'm assuming the 1406 runs perfectly on the truck right now? (Have to assume that or you wouldn't be driving the truck :) But asking so we know nothing external of the carb is the culprit)

IMO choke adjustment seems to be one of the most problematic areas. Adjusted incorrectly, the engine will never run right.

Start with timing, "baseline" the carb (curb idle speed, mixture screws) then start working on carb adjustments.

Truck runs awesome on the street with the 1406, but get it off road bouncing around and its like my messed up Q-jet all over again...bogging, stumbling, loading up very appearant that its not where it belongs.

I may throw it back on next week (leaving for vacation Thurs) and mess around with the choke. Seems like someone suggested that last time, but I got offered the 1406 and HAD to have transportation at the time.

Maybe the 1406 has fuel spilling over the bowl. Float level?

For sticking at 2000rpm, something is wrong with the throttle linkage.

Oh, and if the idle mixture screws don't do anything, then it isn't running on the idle circuit. It's probably drawing from the off-idle circuit. There should be a definite difference between mixture screws all the way in and out a few turns. Sometimes the tips on them get all messed by people.

Some of your symptons sound like they are outside of "tuning" and are physical problems that must be corrected before the real tuning can be done. A carb needs periodic maintenance (at least the choke), so it's best to understand the carb as much as you can. Buying a new one just means you have a different carb that you can't work on.
