where i can order a new complete 6.5 turbo diesel? im lookin for something with its own computer and everything. i want to drop one in my 78 3+3. and im hoping to get a complete motor that i just need to hook up fuel and a batery, and it will run. thanks.

GM will sell you a crate motor, I think five grand or so. You'd need to source the turbo and plumbing separate. There is no computer on these guys.

For what you're thinking, I'd REALLY recommend researching a Cummins swap. You can get the whole motor, turbo and everything from a junkyard or on Ebay, and you can get adapters to many trannies, etc.

i would def. go to the junkyard and get all the hardware wires etc. otherwise ur in for a real headache. you should be able to find a wreck truck and get the whole thing for $3500-6500. then you will know how everything hooks up. plus im pretty sure you will need the sending unit from the donor truck.
Im sure it would run you well over 10K to buy all the individual parts.
 
I was thinking the same thing if I were to get another original desel truck. I was planning on trying to find a wrecked deramax and yanking the eng, trans, ecm etc and then what parts were still good off the wreck try to sell off to offset the price
 
Look in the regional forum for your Duramax:D There is one just north of Los Angeles.

Look on eBay. Don't have to buy there but you can get an excellent idea of the options available in the 6.5. Want to see a Kick-Azzz drop-in? Peninsular Diesel. Look at the top-o-the-line marine engine:bow::bow::D Got $13,000:eek1:

I'd also suggest looking at a Cummins 6BT as an option.
 
i was looking into the cummins swap. has anyone here done it? i am curious about all the computer stuff. thats what im nervouse about. i want it to be reliable enough for work. ill be towing about a 10k pound trailer alot.
 
I'm pretty sure its been done but IMO the Cummings motor is a pain to do stuff with maintenance wise. If I had to choose between the Powerstroke, Duramax, or Cummings to work on all day everyday I'd be choosing the first 2 without thinking about it
 
Why not do a fresh 6.5TD longblock, and use the mechanical pump setup?
 
nothing other than a power wire to the injector pump.
