does anyone make spacers like the 1's to put a 350 crank in a 400 block...to put a 327 small journal crank in the 400 block? or 1 for it to fit a 350 block and use that spacer w/the 350 to 400 spacer also to get a small journal crank in a 400 block.
could i weld the main journals and have it turned to the 400's 2.65" and then balanced? i have welded shafts up to be turned down, but they were just straight shaft for industrial type gear boxes, blowers, etc. how do you weld a crank and not warp it?

There are no spacer shims available for installing a small journal crank into a large journal block or even the 400 block AFAIK. Why would you even want to do such a thing? You would need special rods and pistons to be made for that to even work assuming someone did make a spacer. The small journal crank also uses a small journal rod bearing as well so no other rods would work unless they were custom made.

My memory is a little rusty. Seems to me that back in the 80s, flat trackers were putting 350 cranks in 400 blocks. Seems like there was a special main bearing kit you could buy, with really THICK bearings. I just put em together, someone else ordered the parts.

Might have been a large journal crank, it's been 10 years at least.

A big bore short stroke motor, high rev'n motor. With the 400 bore and 327 crank, makes about a 353....

A big bore short stroke motor, high rev'n motor, exactly what i want to get the jump out of the corner on dirt track w/ 360 cid limit , 353 mayb with stock bore i think 355 with .30 over bore, guess i,ll ebay this sj327 stuff except the cracked block the head casting #'s are correct for '67'68 camaro (any1 doin a 100 point on a camaro?)and buy a lj327 crank...was try'n to make do with stuff i already have.

All 350 chevy's are large journal and they do make bearing spacers to put a large journal crank into a 400 block but not a small journal crank into a 400 block.

If you want a tight reving SBC then build a 302 chevy. You need to start with a small journal block (62-67) then put a 283 crank (3.00" stroke) and you've got yourself one quick reving SBC. Naturally you will need to balance the engine but this can be built with all factory parts = (lot less money). :deal:

Slight hijack... Anyone know if a 307 block will fit a 400 crank? I want to try this setup out. I saw in Engine Masters where a guy did something similar, but I have nowhere near the budget those dudes have.

I'm not sure how much clearancing it would take in the block but the 400 crank needs to have .200" removed from the mains in order to fit the mains of a large journal 327, 305, 307, or a 350.

Yeah, I knew the mains would need to be clearanced, although isn't an aftermarket 383 kit pretty much a 400 crank with 350-sized mains?

Yes, a 383 kit has a new crank with 350 sized mains. When i hear people say a 400 crank i'm assuming they're talking about an actual 400 crank and having to grind the mains down .200". If you had said a stroker crank or a 3.75" stroke crank then i wouldn't have even thought of a factory 400 crank.

Gotcha...thanks for the info.
