Does anyone run 4L80-E\'s?

The 4L80-E is supposed to have the same strength as a TH400 but with overdrive. I was just curious because if people are having trouble keeping their 700-R4 alive why not run a 4L80-E? I was just curious. Later

The biggest challenge of the swap is the electronics. Either you find a computer from a diesel pickup or buy one from TCI (about $800, I think).

Then you need a speed sensor. If you get an earlier 4l80e, from what I have been told, you can install a speed sensor in the tranny. I know the 96 I put in my truck did not have the reluctor ring for the output speed sensor. The best method I could find for a 40 pulse per revolution VSS was using an NP241 from a 91 Burb.

From the 700R4, you would need to modify the transfer case anyway. You would need a 32 spline circular 6 pattern (TH400 / later SM465's).

BTW, the new combo is a little longer... had to lengthen the front shaft and move the mounting crossmember back, too. Also had to fab a mount for height.

IMHO, I would seriously consider a built 700r4 or skipping the overdrive and doing a TH400. I only went to one because I was installing it along with a Vortec 454 (in my 82 K20).

Hope this helps.

How do you like it, has it been a good tranny? What is the first gear ratio on it? Thanks

If I ever blow my TH350 I think I'd look into this option. Its a popular swap for the older muscle cars.
