I have a SRW 14ff open w/ 4.10's in my k10... I need to re-gear and add a locker (for the sand) but I've been holding off because its so expensive around here... cheapest I've been quoted is $800 JUST TO RE-GEAR!

There is a guy on Pirate who lives in Cali (up north) and has a SRW 14ff w/ 4.88's and a Detroit for $500... sounds like a pretty solid deal. I have $1,000 sitting in an account that I've saved from my last couple checks before I had to move out to Texas for school... I wasn't planning on spending it on that but I figure for $500 I could get it, toss it under my truck in an afternoon then sell my 14ff since its in great shape...

Sound logical?

you're nuts if you spend $800 on a regear!! buy the other axle and sell your current one

Yeah thats why I haven't re-geared... Fearless gear is a reputable company around here and they're talking in the $1k mark to do it... gears, full install kit, labor...

The one you are looking at buying, is it "new"? (bearings mainly)

What I'd *consider* is looking at how much it would cost you to do the 14FF you have, yourself. Considering all the tools, parts, you name it, if it's feasible in your situation. Buying other peoples parts is often buying other peoples problems, whether they know there are problems or not. I certainly am not questioning the sellers integrity, but it's like buying a "new" motor from someone. Unless it's torn down, you really have no idea what you are getting.

If it comes in under $500, look at it as an investment in some cool tools you'll have if you ever need again.

I thought 14FF's were relatively simple to setup?

A detroit, gears and install kit are going to be more than $500 so no need to do anymore thinking... I can toss it under my truck in a matter of a couple hours so if its in good shape I'll probably jump on it.

I asked him for some pics as well as how many miles are on the setup and if they did all new bearings/seals when they setup the gears...

I can't beleive that, i paid about 900 and got a gears, full install kit, detroit, 1410 yoke, labor and another 1410 yoke for my dana 60

Sounds reasonable to me. Heck, sell your existing axle for $100 and you have a grand sum of $400 in a new axle...can't hardly buy just the Detroit for that much.

Yep... but I could get more than $100 for my 14ff... good brakes, open carrier (not great but its better than a gov bomb or somethin') and 4.10's...

No thanks :D

Understandable...:D

doesn't matter... I don't get to drive back for Christmas which means I don't get to tow my toy out here next semester. So the truck will be sitting until this summer anyways :( Summer rolls around, I'm out of Texas and moved back to Cali for school and back to my full-time job @ the machine shop so I'll just pony up $800 to have gears done or at that point I might get the tools and learn to do it myself.

Point is my dad fires it up and drives it to work once in a while to keep her running but other than that it's sitting so no need to have 4wd. Plus having 4.88's will significantly drop the stress being put on my 700r even if he is just driving it to work once in a while...

hell if i were you, do it!

then yank the front out completely so its easy to look at and prepare to do...then buy the tools from harbor freight and look at the pirate's guide to install gears..step by step.

"High jack on" Chit Avery, so you are not going to do a run at Univ of Texas or even A&M? What about the Texan wimmens?:deal: Are you dropping out of school completely? Juco? Well, looks like you're going back to the heffers in Fresno.:D :haha: "High jack off"

Set up the gears yourself. Everyone gets so scared of this but if you take your time, and get someone to check them for you, it can be achieved. Hell I set up my first one not even 3 months ago and i do them atleast twice a week now. Even if you spend more doing it that way, you will have the tools. Hell you could prob. start setting up other ppls gears and make the money back x2. just my opinion though do as you wish. If someone is selling a 4.88/detroit 14 for $500 it sounds a lil to good to be true. Id deff pop the cover throw some marking compound and see where it sit before i bought it just b/c ima ass like that.

buy it detroit alone is that much almost

Yeah thats what I'm thinking...

No that came out wrong... I'm not dropping out of school I'm just going back to Cali to continue school. I'll be here in Texas next semester to finish out the year though then I'll go from there... don't worry :)

He's offered to meet in the middle for other people then they backed out so I figure I can get him to do the same... he's 4 hours north of me so we could both do 2 hours... I feel the same way about stuff like this too, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is but I'm waiting on more info. and pics from him...

I just got a PM back from him... he said it is in fact a FF (I assumed it was but he never said in the thread)...

He said it was out of a show truck and doesn't know how many miles are on it but that he'd snap some pictures tonight...

Am I asking for trouble? I never did anything to my 14ff except clean it up and paint it (and who knows how many miles it has on it)... being its a 14ff I'm not too worried about the mileage b/c they seem to run forever BUT should I be concerned since its had a gear swap and a detroit slapped in it? I hate to stereotype but since it was a show truck I'd like to assume he paid a shop to do the gears...but who knows...
