I cut out my very rotted rocker panel and I was thinking about welding in the new one without the back of the rocker. After looking at why it rotted it looks like a good idea. Any thoughts as to why this would be a bad idea? I could weld in some 1/4 inch cold rolled steel round stock for some added strengh.

do you already have the panels? I'd just go with rock sliders(and I don't even crawl).

I'm in agreement, if you've already cut them off, weld in some 1" tall x 4" wide square tubing level with the bottom of the door as sliders, maybe even incorporate as small step which doesn't hang out very far and would slide off other objects - get the best of all worlds since half the work is already done.
