I just bought a 71 GMC Jimmy that sits on a cut down 91 Dodge 3/4 ton frame.
One of the first things I need to do is get a roll cage built and a soft top for the truck. The hard top is currently leaking and in bad shape. I would like to know what size DOM tube people have used and what type designs are out there. I don't know if there are any threads with specs on how guys have built theirs. I would love pics so that I can fully get the idea of what the final product will look like. Also I would love to get a ball park of what some guys have paid to have these built. I have access to a bender but am not sure about my abilities to build one. I thought about just making the bends and taking it somewhere to have it welded together to save money. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts.

I really like this one. I can't seem to figure out how to get his pic to this thread but his member name is (LucasJ03)

Yep Lucas had a sweet cage and first gen for sure. I used 2 inch .120 wall DOM on mine.

Do a search for cage and you will find many threads and pics. also check out the first gen photo gallery. Sorry new computer for me and just getting the hang of it. Windows 8 *&^^^$^$&*&(&((&&&^^^%%

If you are planning on keeping any part of the hard top or the full hardtop I would say 1.5" DOM. Reason is that with the full hardtop in place the vehicle was designed to hold up to a crash and allow the occupants to stay alive. Now it's 20 yrs later and rust and fatigue have gone on but at the end of the day you need to build a cage that suplements what GM did years ago.

If you want a soft top I would start looking at 1.75" DOM Minumum and 2" DOM preferably. Reason being you are now having to create the safety zone and with a full body and typical restraints placed on the design by the body and functionality you need to beef up every part you can so that the areas that are weak don't have as much effect.

I'd start at 1.75"x.120wl DOM and go heavier in some places depending on how you drive the rig and its intended use. Are you building the cage or having somebody build it for you?

High speed desert stuff, slow trails, scenic wheeling? Little mix of everything..

On a full bodied truck I would try to build it out of 2". Lots easier to do it on a full vert like yours.

1.75 DOM I have used and its what I use but my wheeler is stripped down considerably
