Don\'t ask me why but....

I was thinking how does a 4 wheel steering system handle a lane change or slight turn? Sorry, just wondering because I was thinking how the tires turn in to one another and away on the other side.

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

Very carefully... /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif I would think it works the same way as turning sharply, you just have to use much less wheel to do the same thing.

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

The outer wheel of the turn should unlock, depending on what type of front locker you have(excluding arb)to let the wheel spin more revolutions, opposed to the inside wheel. The same goes with the rear....i think /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif....i dont think you want to engage your arb @ 65 down the freeway lol

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

I think the way that the newer GMC trucks w/ quadra-steer is different at certain speeds. When going slower the front and rear wheels turn opposite, like a monster truck steering works. But at higher speeds, you dont have to worry so much about tipping over because the wheels turn the same direction.
ie.slow:
Front wheels \\
rear wheels. //

fast:
Front wheels //
rear wheels. //
If that detailed drawing makes any sense? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Some vehicles it locks out over a certain speed. The Honda 4wd worked exactly as you describe. Why the hell you need 4wd on a car that had a 95 inch wheel base I don't know. You can put you arm out the window and put you hand on a fire hydrant and do full lock and never loose your grip on the hydrant.

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

This is exactly how the quadrasteer system works. It is controlled by a computer which senses the vehicles speed to determine which direction to point the wheels. At 35 MPH+ the vehicle crab walks, meaning both the front and rear wheels point on the same direction. At 35MPH or less they point in opposite directions.

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

I have read about these quadrasteer axles. They are ALL Dana 60's regardless if its half ton or not, which is good. They are supposedly able to self center in the event of failure. They have 35 spline already. They unfortunately have unit hubs and the end joints have threads and need tightened down just like FWD car halfshafts. The joints also have less working angles so they turn less than a straight front axle would. I can scan the article this weekend if you want it. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

That is hilarious!

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

Sure I wouldn't mind reading about it. Let me know when you get it scanned you can e-mail it to me. Thanks!

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

OK work week done, gonna scan it and send it in a few. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Don\'t ask me why but....

I wouldn't want 4 wheel steering, I'd probaly roll my rig pretty soon /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Maybe if I was a rock crawler, but I perfer trails, mud, and some rocks/forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif
