Yesterday, the one time I was not wearing my safety glasses, cause I ALWAYS wear them, and blowing out the filter in my shop vac, AND even my boy said "dad, ya want me to get your safety glasses?" I said "naw, I will be ok", right after that I took a blast of dusty dirt and filthy crap to the eyes. I have said it before to others, SQUINTING IS NOT THE SAME AS WEARING SAFETY GLASSES! I was not really hurt other then having to rince my eyes and them being sore for a bit afterwards. I told my boy "I should have listened to you bud, thanks for telling me though, next time I will already have them on!"

What a dumbass thing to do. Someone kick me. :doah:

He will never forget when he was more responsible than his father lol

A while back I was in the garage cleaning some stuff with gas in a makeshift parts washer. I was too lazy to go get gloves and goggles, so I picked it up with pliers and was scrubbing. Of course it almost immediately slipped out of the pliers and plopped into the gas, splashing it up at my face. I got enough in my eyes that I was just about completely blind and had to stumble into the house to get my roommate to rinse them for me. I always have a big bottle of eye wash in the garage now.

Don't feel too special, we played out the jokes about getting it in the eye a long time ago.

I'm kind of an expert at getting metal in my eyes. I've been to the ER about 6 or 7 times in the past 10 years. And the funny thing is, about 3 of those times I was wearing safety glasses. When I drill steel overhead or grind getting metal all over my head and face it lingers there, and sometimes collects on the top of the glasses, and then when I take off the glasses it all falls into my eyes. I now wear a full face shield and don't care if anyone thinks I'm a dork.

I have had hot metal chips while running a lathe hit my glasses and stick and melt into the lens. THAT is scary sh*t. Also had them land on my lip and burn into my lip and leave a blister. You can't swipe them off fast enough for them not to burn right in.

Lol @ dust

I've had metal in the eyes 3 times and I'm stubborn as **** to go to the ER. Rusted on me twice and had to get it drilled out.

I also had something similar that happend to me i was using my grinder with a cutting wheel and the wheel broke and a pice hit me on my right side of the face good thing I was wearing my safety glasses i had to pull out the pice of wheel off my face it left a little cut.

I use brake fluid as rewetting drops for my contacts. While we are on safety, I've burned myself three times now checking for leaks under a recently run truck.... watch out for those exhaust pipes!!

A few years back,

We had a guy here at the shop working on a running HVAC unit and a 3/8" drill screw fell into a running blower wheel... it shot out and stuck into the lens of his safety glasses.... :eek1::eek1: I'll see if I can find the pictures....

one time in band camp.....

now really, have you ever had a wire fly off the wire wheel on your grinder?

Agreed, I think even worse than when they sizzle my lip is when one shoots into my ear and rattles around searing the inside of my ear. :doah:

Yes and it sucks.

Yep, been there too. Down the back of the shirt burning your back in three or four places too.

If I had a dollar for everytime one has hit me or my welding leathers......

Let's just say that there is probably nothing worse than a HOT piece of welding slag falling INTO and DOWN a boot. :yikes: The pain that follows is pretty intense.

I have a similar story.

When I am using my die grinder, I always use my face mask as I have heard of the disc exploding, but in the 3,000,000 disc I have used, never had any problems.

Well, my number was up.

Heck I was just cutting some thin stuff. I turned it on and when it got up on plane it exploded and hit me right in the right eybrow/eye. It was still spinning and sliced right into my brow and burnt my cheek and eyelids.

The good thing is that it was going so fast it carterized the wounds and only bled a little.

I thought I had lost my eye.

Be careful!

I have never had any of that happen. Dad drilled (pun intended) safety into me. I walk into the shop and the welding hat goes on, ear plugs and safety glasses. Gloves unless I am measuring something.

Your time will come, you ain't special. Poop happens. Most ALL of us are careful. I for one KNOW I'm careful as hell. But as was stated in the title, ANYONE can get complacent from time to time, or lazy or whatever. You can't predict when a cut off disc will explode. You must have only been fabin for a week or two if you never had anything happen......yet. :haha: :haha: :haha:

+1 vote for welding slag rolling around the ear being the worst

When I was a kid I used to work for my dad in the summer sometimes doing decking and siding on commercial buildings. Looooong runs of welding and/or cutting metal. Your clothes look like swiss cheese after a month of that

Agreed, one time I had a good size chunk of slag fall off of some 1" plate I was cutting with the Plasma at work and it hit my coveralls just below my knee... it instantly burned a hole through them and fell between my sock and the tongue of my boot. I reached down to get it out and ended up pushing it further in so I grabbed my shoelace to open my boot and of course ended up yanking it into a knot. I knew I was screwed so I just stood there and took it. :doah:

Interesting you bring this up. I was unloading a customer this afternoon that has a messed up eye. He told us about 6 months ago he was working on a hydraulic ram that had been sitting out in the sun all day and long story short between the heat, a pocket of air and the way it was strapped down when he went to pull the fitting off (which was plugged shut letting it build some pressure) as he turned the last thread out the fitting shot straight out and sliced his face clean open and he ended up losing his eye.

Needless to say I'll be keeping my glasses on even when I think I don't need them.
