take the panel off and see if the rod is attached first
Having similar issue, previous owner replaced both door locks, turns with key to locked position, but when you turn it back to get key out it unlocks the door. Using power option the knobs try to go down but will not lock. Cannot even forcefully push down either side into locked position. So obviously he did something wrong, any ideas?

remove inside panel. see if it is put together right. The lock is turning a lever direct connection, The knob is a rod attached to a different part of the latch mechanism that also is operated by electric door lock. LMC has a lousy diagram and most of the part are not available re popped.
