I started hanging my doors today on my 70 Blazer, everything was going fine until I stripped out 2 of the 3 holes that hold the top door hinge to the body. I don't really know how it happened, although I was tightening and loosening them a thousand times to get it lined up properly. Went to tighten it up once more and it will not hold anymore. Two of them are now stripped out!!!! What is the best way to fix this?? I thought about re-drilling and tapping to a bigger size, but don't want to screw it up further. It is 3/8" fine thread right now, can I try to tap to a 3/8" course thread??

Are you sure the threads are screwed? When I just did my doors had the same thing happen, It was just the bolt threads though I got lucky. I think the part in the jamb is hardened

I think the threads are screwed up..... I got a new bolt from the hardware store and the new bolt does the same thing.. it will screw in, but won't tighten up.

Unless you want to take on a lot of work and cut open the sheetmetal to remove the backing plate, I'd say drill out to a larger size hole and tap again for a larger fine thread bolt.

Using a coarse thread on a hinge doesn't sound like the right move to me.... too likely to work loose and not as much clamping power.

:usaflag:

Thanks Greg! I drilled it out and re-tapped it with a 7/16-20 tap. Re-drilled the door hinge a little to make room for the larger bolt. Re-hung the door and works perfectly! Thanks for the advice on using a fine thread instead of course thread.
