door striker on 73+ k5 - should it have a plastic brushing

yup.

All of them should, I have heard of guys using PEX pipe to replace it

Mine is missing. Maybe that explains the poor door alignment.

Check your hinges for alignment.

The plastic bushing will make your door shut like brand new. As long as your pins aren't completely worn out.

No more slamming the door for it to get shut

my stealership wouldn't sell just the rubber bushing and wanted $17 for a new striker. hell w/ that. i just ripped some duct tape in half lengthwise and wrapped it around the striker 3 or 4 times. it made the door close properly, stopped the rattles and lasted about 3 years. cost to replace about $0.02.

Look in the "Help" section at your local auto supply.

But with the advent of teh interwebs, said Help section is as near as your browser :D

BTW, Wazzabie, it's "bushing" :)

ANYWAY, Dorman sells those "Help!" things under the Motormire brand, and lo and behold...

I may scoot down to the parts house and pick me up a coupla these myself... or I may just fudge the bushings with a piece of plastic pipe, as mentioned...

What should I know about removing the striker? How should I mark it so it goes back in the same location? Is there any risk that the bolt in the back holding it would fall out?

FWIW, I just used electrical tape on my strikers when the plastic bushing wore out. You just need to wrap it over and over and over until you get it pretty thick on there and then the door shuts like new all over again.

Cheap, (free if you already have electrical tape), easy and when the tape gets gouged or knicked and you notice the door not shutting like they used to, just cut it away and re-wrap it.

GM Part number 9601752, they call it an insulator. $1.37 at gmpartsdirect.com.Came in a bag of 10.Not real precision pieces of work, (very) roughly .7" "long", .70" OD, .5" min ID. I wouldn't be surprised if they were PEX or something else not made specifically for this, wall thickness is not uniform, external finish is not uniform, ID isn't centered. But they work. Pretty stiff, but flexible enough they can be forced over the striker.

Thank you for the info. Would you have any extra ones for sale? I'm local and could drop by.
