just bought one to replace the rusted out POS on my ford, it appears to have some sort of anodizing or something, advance auto parts website says it has a phosphate coating to help prevent rust.

Is this like the coating that comes on china sheetmetal that prevents rust for a month until it wears off like so many people driving around have? Or should I scuff it up with a scotch brite pad and paint it?

Like a semi gloss black? It's a type of primer, scuff it and paint it.

Its hard to explain, its bare metal, almost looks like stainless, but isnt.

Either way I put it on, if it rusts Ill paint it when I rebuild the rearend and do the 4.10 swap, Ill get a nice cast aluminum one.
