Double checking (Gearing question)

1976 K5 Blazer, 400cid engine, TH350 automadic transmission, and 38x14.50x16.5 Ground Hawg radial tires on 16.5x12 wheels. Dailly driver, moderit wheeling (Mostly trails) I have a set of 1978 3/4 ton axles with 373 gears. (looking for Dana 60 with 456 gears and regear rear axle in future) Opinions please. Anything I need too look into ???
 
Basicly how bad will 373's be with 38's( 38" Ground Hawg radials messure out at 37 real world inch) and a TH350 automadic transmission. And what else should I look into ??? My K5 will be used as a daily driver ( In town and interstate/highway driving) as well as trails. Very little rocks, mostly basic old forgotten or closed down (Lots have been reopened recently) trail, logger, miner, and old fire roads in the forest, and some mudding out on the plains.

I personally would not go exploring for old ghost towns in the Black Hills with 38's and 3.73's K? /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Might have an adverse effect on your TH350 automadic. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif
 
3:73's with 38's will suck big time /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif i have 4:10's with my 38's and i think they suck /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif with 38's you should run 4:88's anything bigger than 38's run 5:13's /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
 
Now you have been around here for awhile.........If ya would read as much as you post, you would know that the only true and quality answer one could give to your question is..............

It's only going too be till I can get a D60 for up front, then I'll regear the 14 Bolt FF to match the D60. But for the time being, I'm going too have too deal with 373's. Y'all don't think 456's would be alright for what I'm doinng ???
 
4.56 and 38's would be *okay* w/out overdrive I think, but you were asking about 3.73's /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

if you are going to re gear do it right the first time. do you plan on in the future going bigger than 38's? if so go with 5:13's if you plan on staying with 38's go with 4:88's

[/ QUOTE ] Honestly, I don't know. I think 38's will be fine for me, but you know how that bigger tires bug can bite ya sometimes.
 
you need to honestly think about it are you going to go bigger than 38's? if there is even a chance you will go bigger go with 5:13's otherwise go with 4:88's

[/ QUOTE ] If I do go bigger then 38's, it won't be for a few years. How would 5:13's do on the interstate with 38's and a TH350 ??? What RPM's would I be turning at 80mph ???
 
With 38's and 5.13's youd be doin about 3100rpm goin 65.Thats not real bad but if you do lots of highway drivin go 4.88 if mostly in town than 5.13

Basically, you're asking if we think you can run 3.73 gears with 38" tires and a TH350...bottom line add a tranny temp guage and keep an eye on it. That gearing is not ideal but plenty of folks make do with worse. When you get your D60 with the 4.56's, just regear the rear to match. It will be fine.
