Yes this might seem like a newb type question but I did search. I really only need one answer. I got an 80 K-5. I looked at the Tech section and it says Dana 44's were up front until 77. It says they used the 10 bolt starting in 83.

Now I looked close at mine and I noticed it has a drain/fill plug on the front of the diff cover. Does this mean I have a D44? anything else to look for. Trying to figure out what I have.


Speaking of this question might want to throw a sticky somewhere with real pics of the differnt axles we all have?????

the dana should have the model number stamped on the web or the nose, in my case it is on the drivers side bottom web 44-dcf. 44 being the model number. and the front diff shown in my haynes deffinatley aint a dana 44 as its drian plug is on the diff case not the cover.

interesting....because of this i went and took a look at my 83. I have no fill plug in the dif. case, and by the axle identification guide, i do infact have a 44 infront, its not the round/oval case like 10b's.

Quick and easy way to tell a 10 bolt, it has "ears" on the either side of the pumpkin, below the cover. A Dana 44 has a plug in the cover, and like duanel said, it will have a 44-something at the 5 o'clock position, looking at it from the front.

i thought the easy way to tell is that all dana axle covers are straight(vertical) on both sides.

i only found #'s on the back of the casing by the yoke on the pass. side. i cant read it cause of the gunk.
