Double crossover?

Anyone get the new Peterson's 4wheel and off road magazine? there is a steering article and they talk about different crossover steering systems. the double crossover has a link from the steering box that goes to a bellcrank on the other frame rail and then from there it has a link that goes to the driver side knuckle with a tie rod. you wouldnt need the flat top knuckle for the passenger side at all. how wouldw you set up the bellcrank system on a K5? what kind of truck could i find this type of set up on? any one ever do it? oh, and the reason i am asking is because i want to do a cheap crossover for my 10b until i find a d60. and i cant find a flat top knuckle for the passenger side.

IIRC, FJ40 Landcruiser has a steering bellcrank. I think it still steers the passenger knuckle though. Might still be worth a look for ideas. :thinking:

it isn't full hydro steer(that is a steering box). Why they ran the steering box down there, I forget, but it was what was done.
 
They put there box up there because with the linked front when the wheel was turned and stuffed it would make serious contact with the box and hydro fittings. As for any better than regular I think it would end up being more expensive in the long run with the extra fabrication and parts required.

if you want cheap crossover run a draglink to the hole in the tierod. i have seen it done and its supposed to work real well (and its cheap) ill try to find it.

great for coil sprung or spring under setups, not for us...

Its been done by a ck5 user, the angles are not perfect, but it get the job done. Its much better than the stock setup for sure, not as good as a standard crossover setup but its cheap. why spend a ton on something you know your going to get rid of anyways?

Yes I forget who did it but I remember its been done by a Ck5er. He liked it but I still don't think it a great option.
 
he said he wants to do a cheap crossover cause he knows hes goin to be getting a d60. i dont see a problem with it. many vechicles (full size) come from teh factory with this setup.
 
arms aren't expensive, expense is in the knuckles. Which you can resell to someone else. Drag link will work, D44/10 bolt or D60 doesn't matter there.

I think properly designing and fabricating the "double crossover" would be more expensive and time consuming then you think. Would want to tighten up the front frame rails too, since now you are relying on both sides of the frame rail for steering.

What I saw in that article that I liked was the idler arm steering.

How'd I know that pic was coming :D I bet it would come closer to working if you tied into the tierod where the stabilizer hole is instead of where the tierod ties into the knuckle like you have drawn. Would have to insvert the tie rod end for end to make it work. :dunno:
 
right thats how it was done when by a member(maybe former member). I think it was Tweetysaurus, haven't seen him in a long time though.

i Would think it would be fine, instead of all the force on one frame rail, now you have 1/2 the force distributed between 2 frame rails
 
why would you say that? the leverage would be minimal if non-existent since the force enters and exits on the same plane. Force put in would be = to force put out. So actually I'd think you are placing all the force in both frame rails. Correct me if I'm thinking wrong. One thing I see that could be good is you could do a see-saw sort of thing sort of like this:

and use the bottom side for steering input and output and the top for moutning a hydro assist ram. Would place the weight a little higher then the usual setup but less plumbing and no chance of snagging a line.
 
I just think it would be a split of force. all the force on one rail with one arm, add another idler arm, now you have 1/2 the total force on each frame rail.
