anyone put a double din stereo in their truck or k5's? just looking for some ideas on how to do it and where to put one. cant really do a roof mount as i have a sunroof in my blazer
im not happy about it but the po had put in a pioneer cd player in the dash. the just cut out a hole in the dash, and its to big.
if you dont want to cut up your dash, i have seen them in the center councle, between the cup holders. under the stock radio, under the dash, would probably be my choice if i were going to do it.
i have also seen them in vents, but that looks like a lot of work.
ya i was just looking to see if others had done it and how they did it to give me ideas on how to do mine as i would like to do a double din touch screen. the stock radio placement sucks for even a normal stereo little lone a touch screen lol
I cut my dash years ago to fit 1.5DIN in the stock radio location, which worked out pretty well. I had to add a screw hole in the lower right hand corner of the plastic - right at the edge - to hold that corner to the dash. I think I put holes in the steel on both sides of the opening from front mounting screws and ran a steel piece from the lower dash steel to the radio rear mounting stud.
Years later I upgraded to the later cluster cover that has the stock 1.5DIN opening in it. This is expanded like 3/4" in the lower right corner, so the whole radio gets centered just a little to the right of where the "shaft-style" radio went. This meant my original hole had to be opened up some more on the right. Overall this is a much cleaner install, though.
As for going 2DIN, I think the extra inch or so would have to be at the top. You are really running into the curve of the dashboard at the bottom. What I would rather do is figure out how to move the top vent and heater controls to put the radio at the top. This would be especially nice for a touch-screen unit. It seems like a cluster cover could be cut and fiberglassed to make it work. The biggest question for me is the mounting depth. Any head unit with a CD/DVD drive would probably require some real rework to the HVAC ducting.
