I originally got the idea from Willyswanter. Wish he was here to see it.

Here is his original write up. http://www.industrialoffroad.com/geeklog/public_html/staticpages/index.php?page=iorsteering

I tried getting the same cylinder he used, but they were sold out and did not know when they would get more. So I settled on the 2" bore and 1.25" rod. http://surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2008010515491101&item=9-6846&catname=hydraulic
Its a little small, but since the vehicle is 95% street it will be ok. That was one of the problems I had with the old blue truck on mogs. It just wasnt as street friendly yet I drove it offroad 5% of the time. So I was just trying to be more realistic in my build. Thats why I got the 41" radials instead of the biasply tires.
I ended up building my own Mini tierods with an old ORD highsteer tierod. Just used about 10" of each end and welded some tabs on the end. The heims are the 3/4 thread, 5/8 hole heavy duty heim from speedway motors. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/1536,296_Heat-Treated-Chrome-Moly-Rod-Ends-and-Heim-Joints-Male.html Then just used the ES2010 tierod ends on the knuckles which were around $35 a piece from checker.

To mount the cylinder I bent up some 1-3/4" dom tubing and welded it to the axle tube. Still need to add some braces in the center. I just drilled through the center of the tube and bolted it. I still need to mill out the front plate. Gonna be 1/2" aluminum and it will match the spring crossmember.

Some pics and drawings of the heim tabs and cylinder plate. Still more to come.

Why go though the trouble of full hydro for a truck that sees only 5% of it's time off road?
Whats the legal view of this in your state?
I was under the impression the link arms should be level, so it wont side load the cly.

Based on the original thread title, and the pictures, it's only an assist setup.

I would like to hear why you decided on a double-ended cylinder for just assist though.

Pretty much the same reason Willyswanter did it. So its the same speed both ways.
When I originally had the 60 in my blue truck it had the AGR rockram assist steering. I would notice it was slow one way and fast the other way. I wanted it to be fast both ways and the size of the cylinder should still give me enough assist.

Yeah they are supposed to be, but since its an assist system it should remove some of the side load off compared to a full hydraulic system. I also wanted it to be higher then the bottom of the axle tube. The sides of it by the tierods are about a 1/4" below the tube. If you notice Willyswanter steering, his tierod mounts are higher on the knuckle so he didnt have mount it higher.

The flow is metered through your steering box and the steering is still connected via mechanical linkage. Could have been fixed by stepping up in the pump department or going to a smaller ram.

My old blue truck had the hot rodded pump and smaller ram, but I still noticed it.
Willyswanter also said that his worked the best out of any he has used.
