Searched for a thread on it. Can't seem to find it. My 203 pops out every now and then. I know its because of the weak detent spring. Anyone got the link to it or pics.

what i remember is someone put some sort of nut or something to space the spring up a little more.

Sweetk30 iirc is who did it. I did it to mine for the same reason. Works great. I'm on my phone or I would find it for ya

Ooh. Can you get at the spring while the 'case is in the truck? (hard to tell from the pix in that one post anyway)

yes but shifter out of the way = better chances.

and it will be a TIGHT FIT be prepared to have fun.

Hmm. It's just a range box in my doubler ... can you point me to a pic as to where this is on the 'case overall, 'cuz maybe I can get to it easier from above.

Pretty sure its on the underside, passenger side (for a chevy 203) wait for SweetK30 to confirm as im not 100% sure

Oh, doh. Depending on your crossmember it should be easy-peasy to get to. It's located forward and under the shifter:

circled in red. Front of truck would be to the right in this pic, i.e. it'll be on the passenger side.

Now, the other dumb question; does the shifter rod stuff live in the fluid, like am I gonna get doused in gear oil when I undo this thing?

Ah, that was ridiculously easy. Took me longer to wrestle the bench grinder out of the shed and chuck up the nut ("the poor man's lathe": a bench grinder and a drill :haha: ) than it did to do the mod.

Only dropped the pieces once, with only mild swearing. Depending on how worn your spring is, it may be tricky to feed the spring+nut in there upside down. I found that pushing on the plug with one thumb kept it in place and I could thread it with the other hand.

The detents still aren't hyper tight on mine, but it won't pop out of gear over bumps any more (the '203 was REALLY sloppy to begin with :doah: )

Thanks, CK5'ers! If I'd known this was so easy I'd have fixed it years ago :D

Just did it yesterday worked great. Tip put a half inch nut inside the 13/16 socket and it spaces the plug up enough to press up on the spring and tighten
