I was talking to a well-known proprietor of UniMog parts and trucks, and he suggested that I download a complete copy of the UniMog 404 Service Manual for help with my current project. It’s approximately 89MB and is available as a .PDF from a number of torrent sources.

Google: “ars technica unimog”

I see it on a number of Torrent sites, but I’ve never done that stuff before and a lot of it looks like a total virus-inducing nightmare....and I'm also not thrilled at the prospect of handing over my credit card info to one of these sites for access; hoping that my credit card info doesn't instantly get sold to about a ga-jillion crooks!! :doah:

Anyone got a recommendation for a safe way to do a torrent download without losing my soul in the process? :D

FOOK NO.

That's just me. I'd never trust anything from a site like that.

If you must do it. Do it on a PC that doesn't contain any other data and don't use it for anything other then that.

you shouldn't need to use a credit card on a torrent site

the point of torrents is to get around paying for information...it is made up of bits of information coming from several different sources having the same information.
that's how it gets around copyright infringement laws. you are not receiving all of the info from one source, but multiple sources until all the information is complete.

i've never seen one that cost money...if it did, then there would be copyright problems

torrents are very safe, as long as you know were to get them....

First download this.
http://www.utorrent.com/downloads/complete?os=win

install it after.

then after that click this link, and open it with utorrent.

http://torrents.thepiratebay.org/5350719/Mercedes_Benz_Unimog_Type_404_Data_File.5350719.TPB.torrent
then there you go.

should be all you need. any questions let me know

Chris,

You da man!

That seems to be working perfectly, I'll know in about 4 more hours.......

Call me paranoid, but as soon as the download is complete I'm totally uninstalling that Torrent app. The P2P stuff weirds me out...

Manual download complete..... 900+ pages of Unimog goodness!

Greg, I use bittorrent all the time. So long as you close the program out and not let it run in the background you have no need to worry about the P2P stuff.

and really, you should always upload at least what you downloaded. Myself, I'll keep uploading the same info for months until I upload at least 3x what I downloaded. It's only right considering that's how you go the info in the first place, by people uploading it. My internet is slow, so it takes me a while. But there have been times when I'm the only "seed" for more than a year, thus the only one keeping the torrent alive.

Run Utorrent at night while no one is using the computer, that way bandwidth usage from the program doesn't slow down your net surfing :waytogo:

I agree. I waited several days for a seed for a video I wanted. I sort of felt obligated to leave it available for a while to help someone else out.

remember this... somethings are illegal to download via torrent.. music, movies, games, apps... .

however comcast was trying to get it passed so they could block the download of torrents..
well that didnt work.. and here is why..

p2p allows others to share the item... so lets say im new into the music industry and i create a few intro songs and put them on my site as torrents... few people download it.... then they share it and so on... well my bandwidth useage is alot lower than it would be if i just had say mymusic.mp3 and hosted it on my site...

now people are getting in trouble lately... i use demonoid.com and is closed unless you are given permission from a member.. it is a good site.. no porn (no biggie to me as 4wheeler mags and stuff is my type of porn) but good for other stuff..... even at that usually you dont get "snagged" or emailed by your provider... but people are downloading new released movies... and getting snagged...

so just be carefull... a guy i was working with was downloading... and not changing one thing and never stopped.. his comcast bandwidth was 270gb in one month... and comcast gave the letter... you are using too much of your unlimited bandwidth allocation.. one more month and we will ban you for 12 months...

with utorrent..i open a torrent... allow it to start.. right click the item and choose full bandwidth.. then set upload to say 20k or 40k.... i upload as much as the download size..and since i download items that are ok to download i dont worry bout sharing it out....

only problem with uploading ONLY the amount you downloaded is....there is a VERY good chance that you may be the only person still with the last file of a certain torrent. Some torrents are only good up to 99%, and you'll see that looking at other ppl progress. So some files are missing because those that are or were at 100%...are no longer uploading it.

You never download or upload in any kind of order, what you get is completely random for the most part. So sometimes parts of a torrent are lost forever.
