Hey K5ers,

I was servicing my transfer case this past weekend. I took off the full cap first a a good amount of ATF came out. I thought this was weird but then took off the drain plug… A lot of ATF fluid came out.

All said and done, I was not showing any ATF on my transmission dip stick.

My question is, does my transmission drain through my transfer case? I didn’t think so.

When that happens, the transfer case input seal is shot. Fairly common problem.

Thanks for the reply! Is that a very invasive repair?

Most likely, your transmission has no drain. You drop the pan to change the fluid and filter. It's a good idea to add a drain when you have the pan off, because it really cuts down on the mess. You can also just swap to an aftermarket pan that will have a drain. It can also give you a place for a temperature sensor.

You read all of the original post right?

Yeah, the basic question had been answered, so no need to reiterate that. Just giving an additional suggestion in line with the title/question.

Much appreciated all! I will absolutely change the pan to have a drain!
