My dad is vacationing at Lake Tahoe. Drove the boat around yesterday. Woke this morning and headed down to work on the carb. Found this..

He doesn't know anything yet :(
But he does know it's going to cost $6,000 for recovery.
He's looking into a shop locally to start fixing it. Really though, the engine needs to be drained ASAP and the rest of it I'm sure can wait till he gets home. What super sucks.... this is day ~3 of his 13 day camping trip.

Anyone local that wants to make some cash over the weekend? Anyone know any local shops that wont screw him over and do a good job? He was talking about flying me in and start flushing stuff out but I haven't a clue what to do other than pulling plugs and draining oil. He has his Dmax with him also, so I'm sure he is willing to tow it anywhere willing to help him out.

Couple of thoughts:
First, 6 grand sounds really steep unless there is hazmat involved. Kinda hard to tell whats what, not a lot to work with in that pic.
But it does not look like that big a boat.
Full inboard, stern drive, or outboard?
Built in tanks, or separate?

Just going by the pics, if you can get a truck to the edge, I would make the side now tied on a little more secure, throw a line or two over it and tie to the other side.
Then ease back gently and see if you can get the opposite gunnel to break water.
If so, throw a couple of bilge pumps in, and start pumping it out until you can see where the water is coming in.
Stop that and keep pumping.
Load on the trailer and we can go from there.

I'm a little surprised that a boat that size does not have more built in floatation.

It can be a 100 yards off the shoreline and nowhere near a launch ramp on some of those docks. He said they're camping so there is only a few spots such as Camp Richardson or Meeks....can't think of any others that are lakeside off hand.

It is already on the trailer and he's calling shops. Just got the update. It's a 22' jet boat. They charge $6Gs cause there's no competition and people out there camping won't have any way of pulling it to shore. :( bastards

have him call NEwberry's Marine & Service

Kenny Newberry is a Friend of Mine.

Tell him JJ Dreiling sent you, we used to race outlaw karts together.

Last name pronounced Dry-ling

775-230-4342 is newberrys marine

I cant stand these kind of scum bags . . . . out right robbery and dam cops / law wont do a dam thing I beet.

JJ: I passed on the information. Thank you sir

The boat is currently at a shop in town having the engine cleaned up. Right now, that is most important. My cousin is my Father's State Farm agent, so the ball is rolling as to what insurance is going to do for him. Once it's looked at, it will either go to Kenny's shop or stay at the current one. It's not really my choice but I did give him the heads up :waytogo: It is under insured at $10.5k, but if they pay for the recovery and total it, my Dad might not be all that bummed.

This is a cursed ship I tell you.

Also, seems the reason for it sinking is the boot that covers the Drive cable came off at the rear. Held on by hose clamp. There are two boots, one for Drive/neutral/reverse operation and one for steering. I vaguely remember them being attached to the back of the boat, near the pump. I can't believe a boot coming off will sink a boat :(

yup, shift cable boot... a good bilge pump will normally keep up with that tho..

If they total it out, I would definitely try and go that route. With all the electrical under water, there's going to be never ending gremlins that will most likely haunt this boat. Just depends on how electronically "heavy" the boat is.

That does suck on $6k just to get it out of lake. Hopefully that also falls into the insurance window so he's not out that much.

Boat insurance is a little tricky on replacement value. I found that "their" value vs. market value were different. That's why I tried to find a company that is an agreed upon, stated value. Don't forget all the "gear" that was lost. That adds up quickly and hopefully that was also included in the insurance.

Ryoken: For whatever reason there is no automatic bulge pump on the boat, only manual. That was brought up by someone at the dock I guess.

Jeff: We are hoping for it. I don't know how much gear was in the boat at the time but it should certainly be taken into account.

This boat has been cursed from the start. The best day of use.....the very first day we used it. Since then it's either been hit by my friend on a SeaDoo, oil line burst and takes out the engine, almost puts me in jail cause there wasn't a VIN on the back, ran no oil pressure last time out, plagued with engine issues, and now it wants to be a submarine. Boat only has maybe 10 hours on it in the last 4 years.

So, maybe this event is a blessing for you?!? :dunno:

All I know is the gear after our boat was purchases was a few thousand dollars. Much mor than I had originally thought. Anyways, good luck for you....:waytogo:

Still don't have an update or pictures. I did find an old picture. You can see the boots. One of them is a bastard. Pops will be home tomorrow I believe. I'll take a look when I can.

Ours was just stuck on the beach when my parents swamped it, had about 6" of water in it.

Cost $4k to pull it into the water and tow it in.

Insurance covered the extraction, so hope yours does too.

And no auto bilge? :doah:

Ours would make it about an afternoon before it sank without an auto bilge on tahoe.....
