What's everyone using for reasonable drill bits?

I tend to buy a cheap ish home depot set, use for a year or so, wreck them all, buy a new set. Used to be 30-$40. Last i checked, to get up to 1/2", the set was $115!?!

I eventually need a drill dr i guess, but who knows. I use these for everything, and tend to wreck them drilling metal.

Thoughts on reasonable priced bits?

Small bits, I bought a bulk pack at Sams for like $30 a while back. Has dozens. I end up snapping the small ones before they dull. Bigger ones I'll spend a little on.

I buy anything that looks old and quality at auctions and estate sales. Taught myself how to sharpen with a bench grinder. Now I have a toolbox drawer full and can drill up to 1 1/4.

Cobalt tipped and use a drill press & plenty of cutting oil

I had thar skill at one time, sharpening on bench grinder. I haven't used it in so long, I think I need to practice on some cheapies.

I think my index came from benchmarkabrasives.com

Wrote this post, realized that a decent index was way more than a Drill Dr, so I ordered one.

We'll see if i have time to play with it. If it works, i have a huge drawer of crap bits I can freshen up or practice on.

Much better. Mostly fixed the bits in my index I wrecked.

Except a few like these, that I seem to have melted. :doah:

I like this guy! I'm hard on bits and not good at sharpening them most of the time.
I have the DeWalts that he bragged on in this video. I bought them after watching this a few months back. They're really good. You should watch his bit sharpener reviews. I'm about to buy the bit doctor, I put my bits through the ringer pretty often and it appears you can get a pretty good edge on them once you sharpen them using the doctor.
