the struggle is real........ ;)

full

the lower case and gold bits are really junk.. very sacrificial even when new.. I've actually bent them, lol... but I hung on to the case to possibly use down the road... the middle black pile are all quality bits up to 1/2.. MOST being duller than a crocheting contest....

the container at the top are all bits above 1/2".. i sharpen those by hand as needed... the yellow is a new dewalt kit i like to keep around for work.. the red are lifetime warranty ones from Mac I use at the house here... I do need to warranty a couple broke ones and a couple dull ones.... but i have no mac guy anymore, so i need to figure that out..

anyway, who has/uses a Drill Doctor? do they work good? I see a whole bunch of different ones listed at various places... I'd like to bring that pile of good black bits back up to snuff and do better maintenance down the road...

still trying to figure out what I want to do for storage.... don't want to use a standard metal index box... I'd love a cab with drawers and individual compartments.. but can't justify a bunch of money for it either.. Drill Doc would be an extravagant buy to begin with... currently they are all piled in the small tool bag at the top..

Yes, they work great. Easy to use, fast.
I learned how to dress a bit the old fashioned way, but it's just easier to get good consistent results with the Dr.

Lots of cost up front but will pay you back over the years.

Man I just looked this up this morning. I smoked two bits in what seemed like too fast. I need one in my truck.

Works as advertised. I learned to sharpen on a grinder, and when I was working for my my dad’s machine shop I was ok at it. Now I’d be way out of practice. With the DD it is super easy to chuck one up and go right back to making holes. I bought it at my last house so 10+ years ago. Still works.

The one problem I had was self induced. I was trying to use it with a bit that was larger than the machine’s capacity. The holder fell apart and was a pain to put back together. Buy one that is big enough.

I was on the fence about buying one these until I read this thread and looked at my pile of bits, most of which could use a sharpen. @ryoken I also use those paint buckets for storage, made me chuckle when I saw yours stored like that. I really need to find a better way of organizing them....

i did... didn't get the Doc yet, but i did some organizing at least with new containers that I repurposed.. .. i'll post pics when i get a chance.. i've been using those paint buckets at work on my tool "shelf" in our shop for yrs now :haha:... we don't have room for my Snappy box down there... i've been eyeing various "containers" on the web... for all kinds of stuff... just bought one of those dewalt "small parts" boxes... using it for misc driver bits... gonna get another as a small elec connector box.. they're cheap, like $6..

i'd sell redheaded stepchildren to find a source for the small, yellow Dewalt drill bit boxes pictured above with the slide-lock... I have about a 1/2 dozen old ones that i rip the indexes out of, and store various things in each.. countersinks, carbide burrs, feeler gauges, driver bits, etc.. can't have enough of em, just sharpie em... I'm ready to go buy a 1/2 dozen $10 bit kits, JUST for the boxes! ;)

I've thought about using a small 3 drawer craftsman box and add some dividers with 1/4" pine. Then add some labels and be done with it for a very minimal investment.

and I think I have a couple of those dewalt cases

yeah, i've eyeballed the nice metal drawered "bit boxes" for the shop... that sounds like a good idea on the cheap... my big thing is, being marine, I work out of about a dozen various tool bags.. plier, screwdriver, 3/8, yada... i also have one bag that is strictly to carry around those small bit boxes that i repurpose..

I know the drill dr. has a lot of love/hate on different forums. I learned to use a bench grinder and am totally happy. Already had the grinder so just needed a drill gauge. Cheap and effective. I can't say as to the quality of the drill dr., just that you don't need it to get good results.

i've been sharpening em for 30 yrs.... but i'd rather spend the time to do all those on other things if the doc is fast and effective....

I am told its effective but not foolproof or fast. I would like to know if it does a good job on really small bits, those are hardest for me to get a good edge on.

How small are you talking? #10, yes. #41, not so much.

Just the small stuff like 1/16", 1/8", etc. I think I don't get the point quite centered or something on the small guys. Sometimes they are good, other times its like they are only halfway sharp. So much easier on a big bit where you can really measure if the 2 sides are equal and see that the point is centered.

On 1/8 it is good. I think that was the bottom end of the range on mine. I can go look if you want, but I will say anything that is in the stated range centered up. Once you try to cheat the edges is when the results are subpar.

I use mine often, there is a lot that goes into it and I haven't had much luck changing pitch with their techniques. I just stick to their strait up split point method and it keeps them consistent. As for the larger bits I still Dress them on the fine wheel

Bought one a while back. Kept burning up the 9/16" sharpened that several times. Makes up costs quick on big bits.
