'99 Yukon, 2WD, gov bomb, 132+ thousand miles.
It has a very annoying clunking noise in the drive line. This occurs when stopping, starting, and sometimes on whoops (wonderful Oklahoma roads) right after a stop. Dropping the drive shaft and greasing the shaft where it slips in to the transmission eliminates the noise for a while but it comes back.

Does anyone have access to service bulletins that could explain this or advise on a fix.

Like you realize, it is the slip splines in teh rear of the xfer case. I am not sure of the correct repair though.

You could do what i am doing, and sell the IFS chevy for an older SFA. Fixed that problem, and many others for me :D
 
Upgrade your stereo. I fought with that clunk on Tahoes and Subs at a previous fleet job. Greasing the slip yoke was the only thing to temp stop it, but nothing ever fixed it. My '87 2wd Sub does it too. From what I could tell, it's axlewrap pushing and pulling on the d-shaft that was causing it. Let me guess, when you stop hard, it pops real good when you take your foot off the brake?:doah: Sorry I don't have the kind of answer you were looking for.

Thanks for the replies! It actually occurs on both the stop and the start. I wonder if anyone has tried reducing/eliminating the axle wrap?:confused: And by what method(s)?

I hear you! I got rid of an '88 3/4 ton 4WD Air Force surplus sub - wish I still had it sometimes.
 
There was a guy over on ORC/Chevy with a 2wd 2 door Tahoe in 99-00 or so. Remember him dhcomp? Battled this forever. I seem to recall he had it serviced several times and it never went away.

I don't seem to recall it on my '92 K1500 Blazer though.

Don't remember someone battling it. But listen in parking lots, you hear it in just about every chevy of this vintage going into reverse.

I know the dealers had some denser spline lube they used to quite the slip yoke splines at the back of the tcase, but it wasn't a very permanent fix.

No other suggestions. Sorry!
 
It's the product of specs with a too-large margin of error for the output on the t-case to the input on the driveshaft. There is too much lash between the teeth of the gears on said parts, and causes said klunking. Nothing will fix it except for new parts, or just deal with the fact you're driving a rear wheel drive truck. Dodge and Ford have the same issue, as well as any vehicle that is front engine rear solid-axle. It's just that GM has a little more issue with it.

My '99 Yukon has no such problem, even with nearly 140,000 on the clock.

It is 2WD but maybe the issue is the same. Greased the s**t out of the splines in the shaft prior to a Texas trip this weekend. Also jacked it up and let the axle at full droop and sprayed PB Blaster (like Knocker Loose but supposedly does not evaporate)between the springs and greased several places where e-brake cables and fuel lines had been rubbing. No more noises for now!!!!!!!
I've been using anti-seize grease but per the posts above, I may try something heavier next time.
 
That many miles, I'd check the gear backlash....Clunks when changing from the drive side to coast

May have opened up a tad :D
 
My K3500 does it all the time... I gave up trying to deal with it and just have a nice clunk every once in a while. :)
 
Hell, my Blazer never did it but after a few years being offroaded every weekend it started making this "quack" noise when I turned. Something to do with the torsion bars unloading or flexing we figured out. I never cared and just talked louder when the guy who bought it turned.
