drive shaft boo boo

well i guess the ujoint at the transfer case snapped and threw the shaft.
i am going to break down and order the parts to put a bigger ujoint in and make it a u bolt instead of straps.

reallyn dont want to
.with xmas close but this is my daily driver
 
what brand of joint have you been using ?

and solid or greasable ? not the greaseable with plug off cap .

seen way to many cheepy parts store cap joints fail . and if not solid = even weaker .
 
ya im going to get the spicer or the presicion ones no more parts store speacials. and it was the ones with the grease sert in the cap the cap failed but the one without the sert that exploded. found peices of it when pulling the shaft. found the one with the cert in tack.

I was off of a major street pulling the shaft , every time a car would turn i would squint and pray they didnt hit me.

I've helped a friend replace a flex plate on a old Dodge Dart slant 6,on the side of a fairly busy street he lived on,we rolled the car down the hill and parked it with the passenger side tire up on the curb,to gain height !..almost instantly a cop came by,and said "You cant work on it like that here"--after several minutes of arguing,the cop got a radio call and had to leave--as he drove away,he said "if thats still here at 5 pm,it'll be towed,so FIX it FAST!"..

We did manage to get it done,and like you said,every time a big truck or cars would go flying by,we would cringe,pray they didn't hit the car,or run over our feet...

That day ranked about #3 on the suck scale,as far as roadside repairs..#1 was having to change a flat on a busy interstate during "rush hour" with only a bumper jack & lug wrench,twice the truck fell sideways off the jack,when 18 wheelers fly by,only inches away,at 65 mph...:yipe:..

I've been told to stay away from precision joints by my local driveline shop.

Better off with a Moog or spicer like said above.

Believe me--mine were!...:yikes:...

Last time I had a flat on the highway,I just kept going SLOW in the breakdown lane,to the next exit--screw getting killed trying to change it there!
...by the time I got off the highway 3 miles up the road,the tire was halfway off the rim,one bead came off the outer side of it...the remains of the tire were HOT and smoking too,and I was only able to go maybe 10 mph tops..truck felt like it had square tires ,thought the cab and bed would come loose from the frame the pounding was so severe!..to my surprise,the mag wheel suffered NO damage,I figured it had busted into chunks,judging by how bad the truck was pounding..:eek:.
 
I reluctantly used a "Duralast" Autozone u-joint last year when I had to replace a front axle joint on my pickup...seeing what a job it is to replace one,I had wanted to use good name brand ones,but the Spicer ones I had on hand, that were supposedly the correct part numbers,wouldn't let me clip the snap rings on...Autozone was the closest store ,I had to bum a ride to get there..

I was very gentle with the gas pedal when plowing "around a corner",for fear either the u-joint or the axle ears would fail,they were very rusty and thin!.....my truck always lurches when cornering in 4wd and it makes me nervous when you feel that binding sensation...but it made it through the worst winter we've had yet here somehow..:screwy:..

I used to run "Amgauge" brand u-joints we sold at one store,very cheap,but they held up well..we also sold Neapco's and I had decent luck with those also...that was 25 years ago though,and a lot of "good brands" have now gotten to be junk made overseas ,so I cant say if they are good "now"...
 
i have learned that the nut that holds the yoke on is a Prevailing Torque Style Nut so when you take it off replace it. the stupid nut came loose and binded on the u-joint causing it to fail. I have ordered 2 one too replace the current one and one as a spare. if you guys are interested off road design has them they are 5 bucks

learn something new everyday....

spicer or neapco I thought were the only good choices, I have a mix of both non-greasable
 
well off road design has the correct one the one from orielys in the wrong thread pattern
