Drive Shaft Loop

Yeah i learned my lesson this week why a driveshaft loop is a good thing to have, to bad i didnt doin bout 65-70 on the highway when the u joint at the t-case let loose. bounced off the road flew up slammed the underside tore a hole in the floor knocked all the change out of the console and then ripped off at the rear and bounced out behind me. car that was following me hit it and got a flat tire. not sure how it missed my gas tank (just filled it with a tank of super) guess i was pretty lucky considering everything. The old lady nearly crapped her pants when it hit the floor! So im def. going to install a drive shaft loop when i put the new cv drive shaft in. (What sucks is that driveshaft is only bout 1.5 months old. apparently my tranny mount broke and tipped the trans and t-case at a funky angle and bound the u joint. didnt damage the t-case or rear at least. guess im gona get energy suspension tranny mounts probly new motor mounts while im at it.

Lucky, sometimes that's a pole vault!

On Jav's desert racing S-10 he used a limit strap for the loop. Doesn't beat up the driveshaft like a chain can, but is still flexible.

theres no way that thing wouldve been able to pole vault us. just not possible. couldve done way more damage though

It was on mythbusters but I didn't see how it turned out. I don't think it would happen.

It would do a number to everything in the back half of the truck though

IIRC they had to drop it into a pothole to get the tires a few inches off the ground. Its been a while though I might be wrong

Did mythbusters (sic) use a car or a 4wd truck? If a truck, did it have taller than stock tires?
At a really shallow angle, i.e. nearly parallel to the ground like in a car, I would expect the drive shaft to do nasty things to the rear axle b4 collapsing. As the angle increases the 'pole vault' possibility increases. At some point of diminishing returns (I'd guess somewhere btwn 30* and 45*) the drive shaft is more likely to bend b4 doing serious damage to other parts, though during the bending phase it would probably harm other stuff.

well i'm not sure about a driveshaft sending you flying but i know from experience a rearend lockin up will send you sideways in a hurry

it all happened so fast but im pretty sure that the back tires didnt leave the ground. im sure the suspension flex took care of it. i know that it couldve very easily destroyed my gas tank, tire, fender. im really glad that there wasn't motorcycle behind me! that wouldve really sucked. i did see that myth busters and they used an old boat with very little suspension flex and it hardly did anything when it went loose.
