Drivelines with 6" lift?

Re: Drivelines with 6\" lift?

<font color=purple> That's exactly what I'm doing ........ I need the extra lift for my 35's and a 2" is the cheapest and easiest way to do it and still not mess things up by going with the 3" or custom 4" or more jobs out there .

Re: Drivelines with 6\" lift?

Thanks jesse, I see your point, but I'm not swapping 'cases which requires a tailshaft or entire transmission change, nor am I scouring a junkyard for parts to Dodges which around here would be near impossible to have sucess at. Unfortunately that only leaves one other option....but I'd bet the slip yoke CV is FAR better than my current u-joint shaft. And with my 230 HP 305 I don't really think I'm going to even break that.

Esteban,

Well, you've obviously seen my truck out on the trails. I first had a 4" lift, then went to the 6" lift later. I did have my rear shaft lengthened after the 4" lift, but it is still long enough for the 6" lift. However, I did drop the t-case (cheap, just turn the spacers over under the frame) after the 6" lift, due to bad vibes. I don't get any vibes anymore except at high speed when I let off the gas quickly (like anything over 70mph or so). So, I normally cruise at about 65mph now, which nets me much better fuel mileage anyway!! And no tickets! One of these days I will either get Jesse's slip yoke eliminator for the 208 and use his CV shaft, or just have the spring perches turned. I never lengthened my front shaft, and have never had any problems with it. And I have seriously flexed that thing, as you have seen...last time on the rti ramp I checked it again, it is fine...so you can get away without lengthening the front (well, let me rephrase that: you SHOULD be able to get by like I did!)

So, in my estimation, you would need to at least lengthen the rear shaft, probably lower the t-case and maybe have the perches turned if it still vibrates. Most likely you will not need to do the front yet. My driveshaft guy will lengthen a shaft for about $100 give or take a few bucks (he just quoted my brother $75-120, depending on the shape of his old shaft) Oh, and don't forget, you can have some shims made up pretty cheap, they should get you in the ballpark!

Re: Drivelines with 6\" lift?

I've got an '86 with a 6" suspension and 35's and I was hearing this rattling noise and I couldn't place it so I was on my way to have it checked out...broke a U-joint, my driveshaft ended up in the middle of the freeway and my transfer case was messed up. So I had a custom driveshaft built ($300) plus I needed to replace the transer case. The driveshaft which broke was not long enough so I'd save your time and money and if you get a 6" suspension, get a longer drive shaft (I think mine was extended like 3/4 ")
