I have the chance to get a AAM front 14 bolt out of a 08 dodge 2500 with 4.10s for dirt cheap. Comes with springs, brakes, panhard bar, steering, trac bars, ect, its a complete drop out with only 89k miles. I do want to add springs up front and since this axle is already set up with them I figured all I need is a drivers drop 241 from a 88+ and some fabrication parts. It is a extremely beefy front axle. What do u think?

Well the big problem is the lack of selectable hubs and having unit bearings. There are conversion kits available, but they run around $1700 IIRC, it is a beefy axle for sure but honestly not as beefy as a d60.

I did some reading on the AAM front 14 bolt. Side by side it is comparable to the D60. By saying its not as beefy as the D60 is a overstatement, i know all hail the D60 front axle:bow:. D60 front shafts= 1.41 32 spline, AAM front shafts= 1.40 33 spline. D60 front ring 9.75, AAM front ring 9.5. And you are correct about the manual hub conversion....:eek1: they think they are made of gold. WTF is that about? Honestly i can get the axle for 300 bucks and all i need is a D drop 241 and some other minor stuff to have coils up front. I was just wanting to know if its do-able. Its already set up for coils from the factory.

peterson's 4wd off road uses this axle in chevy 2500 hd SAS because the newer body style's come with a driver's side drop already. finding a driver's side drop chevy 241 should be REALLY ****in easy.

the dodge axle will also come with ABS.

here's the article.

HOWEVER... unless you plan on rebuilding the transfer case at the same time, or if your t-case is ****ed... moving the drive shaft to the driver's side, you may end up modifying the exhaust, and the transmission shift linkage... but there's really no way of knowing that until you have it bolted up and tested fitted. at that point, you're basically committed.
plus the ujoint modification.

might be easier just to spend a lil bit more on a dana 60, more plug n play. modifying the leaf perches on 60 is probably easier then swapping t-case, exhaust, shift linkage, and ujoint/drive shaft mods.

I have already sourced a D drop 241, and its FREE:waytogo:

well it needs to be rebuilt.......

This is the advise i was looking for. Thank you for putting it into better prespective and not being one sided. You are right. Its a little more work than i thought. And it would be even easier, and maybee cheaper to just spring my already "beefed up" front 10 bolt.

Ummm now you got me thinking.....

I've got one in my 07 Ram. I've had nothing but problems with track bars, ball joints and steering. Like 3 sets of ball joints in 100k miles problems. The unit bearings and u joints havent given me any problems. Spend 800 on some carli ball joints and you'll have a reliable front end.

:eek1::eek1::yikes: WTF. You just unsold me from this whole idea. 800 bucks for ball joints. You are out of your mind. I should have known, it comes out of a frekin dodge.

over on pirate i found a writeup on how to use ford 50/60 srw hubs and knuckles out on the dodge dana 60 fronts to get live spindle and hubs on the CHEEP .

but the newer stuff is good and if the price is right go for it and let us know how it works.

Yeah i can already tell you how its gonna work out. Its not.:haha: LOL. Not for the price of maintenance. F that. I started doing some dodge forum reading on this axle and this thing just LOVES to fall apart. No longer interested. Just gonna spring my 10 bolt.

60 king pins, or even 44 ball joints (the way i am goin) gotta be better then some $800 bj's for an aam.

i believe this thread is DONE SON!

Yes this thread is OVER!!! LOL

4wd offroad article on carli joints

carli joints website

$450 per side.... or $800 for a complete kit
they are described as "bomb proof" though.
my understanding is that ball joints in a solid axle don't take as much abuse as ball joints in an IFS rig.... which is one of the reason everybody does SAS... so stocker 3/4 dodge ball joints must be weak!

The upper joint is only for location, the lower takes all the load.

Dynatrac has a cheaper set, I think they are 650ish. Moog seems to be rebuilding warranty replacement joints and the quality is suspect.

Won't work on this axle I don't think

Buy the axle and re-sell it

I was thinking about. I can get it for 300 and turn around and sell it for 6-700.
