Driveshaft Balancing

Anyone know how I could balance my driveshaft without having to put it on a machine or taking it to a shop? Thanks.:D
 
Worm clamps. Use one or one on each end. The screw part will act as the weight. Put it on and drive it and just move it a little bit at a time and you should get really close. I did this and it took getting out of the car about 15 times but we got it.
 
Drill a small hole in the driveshaft tube, add a couple ounces of ATF, weld hole back up.

It works just like media balancing in tires :thumb:
 
Never thought about ATF, makes sense though.

I have seen the hose clamp trick work though, there is a way to take away some of the guess work with a micrometer but I can't remember how to do it off the top of my head.

No crap? I never would of guessed that it was something of that sort. Well, I must say that I will be using a bit of tranny fluid after I build my new front driveshaft after the B52 install. Thanks for the kick in the arse.

But now the question arises of how much ATF does one use to balance a typical DS?
 
As this seems a viable option, I'm wondering the same thing. Quart maybe? Would this work on a variable length driveshaft (like the front DS style one piece that slides into the other)? I'll try the hose clamp one first, but the ATF sounds more permanent and less likely to be screwed up.

Did you check or replace the universal joints? A stiff or bad U joint would cause the drive shaft to vibrate. Also if you reciently replaced the U joint, did you replace the yoke in the exact location. if you reinstalled it backwards ( 180 degrees off ) you could introduce a vibration. Carefully inspect the driveshaft for the location of lost weights ( cleaner small square spot on the shaft ). That is the starting location for the head of the worm clamp ( discussed by Yobtaf above ).
 
The u-joints are fine. I had the DS shortened to fit the truck and the bushing on the slip is a little loose, so the shop wouldnt run it on their balancer. If I can find a new bushing, that might cure som eof the problem, but the DS still needs balancing from where it was welded.
