How much play should there be between the splines and the slip yoke on a front drive shaft. If I move mine back and forth at the joint end it probably will move an 1/8" or so when it is pulled about 2" out from fully compressed. Is this too much or is it ok. I makes some noise when I drive it. Just want to confirm before I have a new one made.

This is the slip yoke on the front driveshaft. It is a CV shaft and has a slip yoke at the pinoir end of the shaft. I have the shaft sitting on the bench so there is no relevance to the xcase or pinion yoke.

does it still grab and pull when in 4 wheels? it sounds like the slip part is worn out but i would still run it. new there should be no play like that.

Mine has been like that for a while. It still works, i'll fix mine if it breaks.

the newer trucks you have to get the whole back half of the case to replace it........ had to do one the other day also had siezed bearing on the output shaft.

It still works, but it makes a horrible sound when taking off. Maybe I just need some real thick grease. I just used the standard Valvoline red stuff that says for GM that I use on the other joints.

Is there a specific grease to use on the slip yoke on the drive shaft.

mine doesnt make racket when im in 4 wheels, maybe it should be replaced. sounds like yours is a pretty severe case, 1/8th is alot of play actually. id say mines about 1/16 or so.

Yeah if its noisy probably time to service it .

Mine is a little floppy , but its the original one and its quiet ( except when it rubs my exhaust LOL ) . I carry a spare in case .
