Last trip we took a u-joint bit the dust and took part of the weld on yoke with it. The joint ate through the cap into the yoke creating a decent crater on the machined surface.

Got it home and took the shaft to a shop to have a new yoke welded on and now I have about 3” of slip yoke hanging out. It looks like too much to me, but would it be ok to leave it? Before it was only about 2”.

Blazer suspension is stock with sm465/208 combo. Shaft measures 19 1/2 center joint to center joint. IMG_4925.jpegIMG_4926.jpeg

Yes , it’s too short - if driven with that much slip yoke hanging out it will eventually cause bushing and bearing wear on the tail shaft and related parts and very possibly cause a driveline vibration at speed.
Get that rectified!

Yep, where the mark is at the 2” line is probably the old rear seal mark

Most rear axles only cause the driveshaft to traverse ~.5” total

That’s what I thought. Makes me uncomfortable just looking at it. So what’s the consensus, have 1-1/2 slip showing or?

Needs to be 1.5” longer or so. Double check your original measurements vs how it is built. Could just be made wrong

Did they fix free of charge?
Kinda, but not really. Turned into my word versus there’s. I had no pictures of it before and they said it measured the same as when I dropped it off. The person who was building them today re tubed it for me so I gave her a few bucks. No material costs or anything.
