today on my way home from work, im driving my 91 down a busy street at 25-30 mph, not hot rodding it in any way. suddenly i hear a *tink* followed by a series of thuds. at first it didnt sound like it was my truck, so i assumed it was the junker in front of me. i pulled into a gas station to get a pack of smokes. the noise stopped as i pulled into the parking lot, so i thought nothing of it. i pull out, and about 10 yards down the road it starts doing it again. so i figure the front CV shaft that i'm too lazy to change that has been hanging on for almost 2 years (it just makes noise, not actually broken yet) has finally let go. i stop the truck, crawl under the front, and see that the outer boot is now torn, and the joint has alot of slop in it. great, that's my problem. i'll limp it home and fix it. i get about a mile from home, and the thumping is almost unbearable. and the rear end seems to be hopping. i can hear it clearly now, and its not the half shaft. its at the rear of the truck. i pull in the driveway, jack the rear up, and pull it in gear. i quickly find out that my rear brakes arent working, and that the noise is definitely out back. pull the driveshaft, spin the axle... obvious catchy spot in it. so i pull the cover and what do i find? anybody wanna take any guesses here? :D

Gov Lock is fine...

casualties...

Pinion Gear Teeth -2
Ring Gear Teeth -1

BTW, the truck is currently wearing 245 75 16 Firestone Steeltex, and they're bald.

not sure what exactly happened. its got ALOT of slop in it now, almost 1/8 of a turn to the pinion before anything else even thinks about moving.

No, Gov-lock carriers are different than the open carriers.

i believe they are the same, the only difference would be the spider gear spline count. in 89 they went with 30 vs the older 28.

You mean like this?

Yep.. stage two shift kit...BRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *CHIRP* clunkclunkclunkclunkclunkclunk. Had just a little over a year of abuse on this R&P, didn't even feel like it loosened up or was sloppy when i took it apart. just shock loaded i think. :frown1:

rather than fix the rear end, and the other odds and ends on the truck that need attention, ihave just bought a replacement. i got a 93 C2500. only a temporary truck, as i'd like to get into a K2500 x-cab shortbox, but it was cheaper than fixing my 91. already got a potential buyer for it too.
