It's also much cheaper and much higher octane.

The answer is more compression and timing, using alcohol to control detonation, and smaller engines in our econoboxes.

The question then remains, do the manufacturers have enough sense to build an engine that can last a long time at 14:1 compression ratio?

I have a feeling hydrogen fuel cells are the future. The military is using them and as a bonus they also make nice power generators that can produce 110v, only emission is water which if you use a diesel fuel cell hybrid you can convert the water back into hydrogen with the diesel motor to fill the fuel cell tank.

Here, if you can find it, E85 is cheaper than gasoline.
