Im have to say have been gone since june of 2010. i gave my K5 to my dad... i just got it back last week. and im Back!

now my issue. i hcanged the plugs and wires was empy on gas so i filled it up. when i drive or accelerate it sputters kind of like a mini back fire but in rapid sucession. what could that be. idle it runs fine, little pedal is fine when i stomp its fine about %50 of the time. but as im drving down the road trying to get up speed either fast or slowly i get sputtering and loss of power. It never dies but sound so sickening.

If this is the wrong spot please let me know but im excited to have it back and get to work on it again. and this is making me sick.

thank you
Chris

I'm going to assume non-TBI since it says it's an '85.

My first notion is that it is an ignition glitch. I would check your plug wires. Wet them down with a spray bottle of something. Don't ask me why, but windex works pretty well. If they have a short, they will arc out and you will be able to see and hear it, especially if it's dark. If you find a sparker, electrical tape will temporarily fix it. If no spark, remove the distributor cap and check for carbon buildup or anything else that looks fishy. So on and so forth for rest of your ignition components.

If it all checks out, you may be leaning out your fuel. In which case, it's fixable, but you need to know about carbs...or learn.

Purely based on your description, it sounds like an intermittent 'miss' in the ignition. I would start there.

Condensation may have built up in the tank while it sat empty. This would get you watery gas at the bottom of the tank after you filled it. Try some additives for that.

I think it may also be some buildup in your carb. Did your Dad let it sit up awhile? I bought one my blazer in February and it had a brand new carb on it but had been sitting up for about 4-5 months. It was running terrible and having some similar problems as your's but I kept spraying carb cleaner in the carb and after a few times it fixed the issue completely. I have also heard that the ethanol blend gas we have here now is terrible for anything with a carb and that you should mix some kind of additive with it.

Have you double-checked to make sure all of the plug wires were routed correctly? I'm not trying to insult you, but it has happened before and sometimes a rig can almost run decent with two swapped.

Also, it's not too hard to crack the insulator on a plug installing it. This can also sort of run decent...

Since it was low on gas are you saying that you don't know how it ran before you started?
