Dual 465's..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

on a dual 465 the shifter for the secong trans come up at the rideg in the floorpan near the front of where a bench seat would be
how much longer is the t400 then a 465+ adapter and bell?
there are 2 tapped holes on the side of the 465 that can be used for a trasfer case shifter to pop up about the same distance from the firewall as the 465 shifter
I have a shortbox and it has lots of room

A pic of the broken shaft. I still cant believe the shaft broke before the u-joint. Its only a 1310.

So the question becomes: Did the input shaft break from excessive input torque or did it break because the intermediate driveshaft was placing side loads on it? I think mj has the right idea with solid coupling the output shaft of tranny 1 to the input shaft of tranny 2. However, some type of adapter to solidily lock the two tranny housings to each other may still be required to prevent the shafts from seeing anything other than rotational forces.

cool idea i have been contemplating it for a while now. , i was afraid to try it due to the falure problem you had. i came up with the fix... the spicer 5330a 5spd manual trans
from a military 6x6!it will take the torque from the primary trans with no problems /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

I'm not really that surprised considering that with the first trans in 1st gear you are putting over 6 times as much torque into the input shaft of the second trans.

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

But multiply that again in the second trans and then again in the t-case.....The front output on the 205 should have been the first to go.

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

It depends on what gear the second trans was in. If the first trans was in 1st gear, and the second one in 4th gear, then the 205 isn't seeing any more torque than normal.....but the input shaft of the second trans is still seeing 6 times as much torque as normal.

any other way would be bootyfab
54mm thick
question is aluminum or steel?
I like steel but the machinist says aluminum is more then up to the task

that picture tells all, it was a torque related failure. /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

Yes a solid unit would be ideal but also costly. I did mine for virtually free. I have the cost of a couple u-joints and everything else was just time. No machinist to pay or giant blocks of steel or aluminum to foot the bill for. If i had the money i would have just bought a doubler from ORD and been done with it. It is a good idea and MJ is definatly on the right path to do it and have it last a very long time. The only other problem is going to be making other components (driveshafts, t-case, and axle shafts) stand up to the torque. As long as you dont have the foot to the floor, ballz to the walls driving style i think it should be fine. Anyways my 2 cents worth input.

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

High grade aluminum should work OK. They make lots of airplane parts out of it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif The Doubler from ORD is also machined out of aluminum. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif But then it only sees twice is much torque when the front t-case is in low range. When you shift the front tranny into low then the torque is multiplied over 6 times... /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif Overbuilding certainly couldn't hurt. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

With either design, I think that the most important thing will be to make certain that the two shafts are perfectly in line with each other. Those shafts can take a tremendous amount of twisting force, but just a little bit of side load forces the shaft to be bending at is it spinning and it simply can't deal with that.

Re: Dual 465\'s..got some pics today! UPDATE....BROKE IT!!

these old trannys are built pretty sloppy with the ballbearings etc
pretty forgiving
with a billet machined adapter it is going to be very true, as true as the OEM case will allow
and it is cheaper to produce then the 3 welded pieces as you can skip the planing it true after welding bit
everything locates off of the bearings
